The background of: ANKLET

silver, anklet, history, accessory, quaintrelle georgianaAnklets are quite popular type of jewellery, especially during the summer time when woman walk barelegged. In the Western world, where they were introduced much later, in the 20th century enspecially in 1970s during the hippies era, anklets usually do not have a special meaning, it is only worn for the fashion purpose. Sometimes the right or left ankle could indicate a person that is married or single, sometimes hetero- or homosexuality, but these indications are more typical for some communities and are not universally recognized in Western countries or in the world.

The anklets come from Eastern, especially Arabic countries, but they are also typical for India and Egypt. In these countries anklets from precious metals and their special meanings were invented, sometimes the anklets had a form of a tattoo. In Egypt, but also in other ancient civilisations such as Sumer, an anklet made of precious metals indicated a person of wealth, yes in this case anklets could have been worn by both, men and women. Common people were wearing them as a good luck charm.

In India the pendants attached to the anklet could have a magical powers and a jinglebell pendant had the purpose of driving away the animals and insects with its sound. Anclets also existed in Europe during the Bronze age they indicated a married woman or the tribe affiliation, later in the history of Europe they disappeared. In the Middle East a special type of anklets existed, this jewellery consisted of two anklets that were tied together with a chain, which restricted women´s length of steps, tiny steps were considered more gracious and feminine.

And what about you and anklets, do you like them? Do you wear them during the summer?
