Visit to Chateau Pillnitz (Dresden, Germany)

In this (revamped) post I am sharing with you a few photos from my trip to chateau Pillnitz in Sachsen, Germany. This place is located near Dresden (cca 15 km) so if you visit this city I really do recomment you to do a Dtour and visit this chateau. The palace is located on the riverside of the Elbe river and consists of three main buildings (these are called Riverside Palace, Upper Palace and New Palace) that are located opposite to each other so that they create a square filled with fountain in the middle and flower beds around it. There is also a nice park around it.

This chateau is connected with Constantia, Imperial Countess of Cosel (1680 - 1765) who was a maitresse of the king of Poland Augustus II the Strong. Before she met the King she was part of the gentry and she was very well educated. She was quite a freethinker because before she got married she was a mistress of Baron of Hoym, her future husband. Later on she became mistress of the Polish King, they had three children together. Her fall was caused by the fact that the courtiers thought that she meddles too much in the politics. The courtiers managed to turn the Kings attention to a new woman and by this way they reduced Constantia´s influence but she was still seen as dangerous because the Kind had allegedly written her a promise that he will mary her. Before she was able to get her hands on this important letter she was arrested and then imprisoned in Burg Stolpen for 49 years, till her death. She is also burried at this place. A novel Countess of Cosel  by Polish author is based on her life, this book was also made into a movie.

The river Elbe offered a possibility to go on boat trips. This is a boat that was used by Countess Cosel. Note the flat base of the boat that enabled it to sail even in shallow waters of Elbe. The fact that the chateau is near a river is a disadvantage in recent years because it has been flooded a few times.

This baroque chateau is channeling the chimpiserie style that was popular in the period and later classicist elements were added to it. The palaces contain beautiful decorated rooms and various museums.
Palácové budovy skrývají překrásně ozdobené místnosti a najdete v nich muzea.

The park od Pillnitz is probably most famous for its huge Japanese camellia flower that was importet from Japan in the 18th century. This camellia is dubbed Grande Dame and belongs to the oldest ones in Europe. The flower is protected from cold winters by a huge greenhouse.

  3. As someone who is very much excited about anything history related I found the story of Chateau Constantia Imperial Countess of Cosel's rise and fall from from grace very interesting. Especially as they denounced her 'meddling too much in politics' which is another way of saying how scared they were by her intelligence!

    1. True. It has happened to many women in the history. Usually those people were affraid that they would lose their own money or status because they were not in favour of these powerful women.

  4. Adding Dresden to my travel wish list. The buildings are beautiful, to say the least. I guess this place was full of splendor in during its time. I am just awed at that massive greenhouse! And to think it was built to protect a flowering plant from Japan. Wow.

    1. The greenhouse is breathtaking, I haven´t seen anything like it before. They constructed it so it could be moved (the flower is not in the greenhouse the whole year, just during cold months).
