The purpose of uniforms

The uniform of the members of state forces (police, soldiers) creates in them a sense of loyalty. The look of such a uniform is prescribed and one could not change anything about its look. In the case of voluntary uniforms that is created e.g. by the affiliation with some subculture, the changes of the looks of the clothes is possible. The uniforms of employees indicate their authority (e.g. postman, flight attendant) and it also represents the institution and the more important company the more important the representative purpose of the uniform.

 

Uniforma členů státních sil (policie, vojáci) má za účel vytvářet v těchto jedincích pocit loajality. Taková uniforma je předepsaná a od předpisu se nelze odchýlit. V případě dobrovolné uniformity, která je vytvořena např. příslušností k nějaké subkultuře, jsou přípustné změny, dle rozmaru nositele oděvu. Uniformy zaměstnanců mají zas za účel poukázat na jejich pravomoci (např. pošťák, letuška) a zároveň reprezentovat jejich instituci. Většinou platí, že čím důležitější společnost, tím je reprezentační ráz uniformy důležitější.

The uniforms of soldiers bear state symbols on them, which is why they could be seen as a symbol of ideological allegiance of the wearer. The wearer of the uniform acquires anonymity and disposes of personal responsibility, gains authority and acts in order to achieve higher goals. The uniforms of soldiers distinguish the allies and foes on the battlefield, e.g. in the Middle Ages the soldiers were differentiated by the colour of their sash.

Vojenské uniformy nesou symboly států, za které bojují, mohou tedy být považovány i za symbol ideologické orientace svého nositele. Nositel uniformy získává anonymitu a zbavuje se osobní odpovědnosti, získává autoritu a jedná ve prospěch vyšších cílů. Uniformy vojáků odlišují jejich spojence a nepřátele na bitevním poli. Např. ve středověku se bojující strany odlišovaly barevnou šerpou.

There are two types of uniforms – ceremonial and daily uniform. The celebratory uniform is created with the purpose to represent, e.g. on parades, it is more decorated and not that practical. On the contrary the uniform for daily use is created in order to be as practical as possible. It usually has a lot of pockets and the materials are functional to be waterproof and to keep the person warm. An enormous visual change of the uniform is usually connected to the coups d´état when a new system is established and wants to distance itself from the old regime.

Též je rozlišována uniforma slavnostní a každodenní. Slavnostní uniforma je vyloženě určena k reprezentaci, např. na vojenských přehlídkách, je zdobná a ne úplně praktická. Naopak uniforma určená ke každodennímu nošení v práci je navržena tak, aby byla praktická. Často má množství kapes a látky jsou funkční, aby držely teplo a nepromokaly. Celková změna vizuálu uniformy obvykle souvisí se státním převratem, kdy je nastolen nový systém, který se chce distancovat od starého státního zřízení.
