The symbolism of choker necklaces

In this post I want to look into a type of necklace called choker. It is a close fitting necklace made of various materials. They were very popular during the Victorian era when they were worn with various pendants but plain ribbons with a bow were worn also during the Rococo era. In these days chokers are mostly associated with the Gothic fashion.

Throughout the history the chokers had different meanings. After the French revolution (1789 - 1799) a red choker on an aristocratic neck was a way to mock the revolutionaries who beheaded lots of aristocrats for their life of privilege. At the same time it was a way to pay respect to those who did not survive the Revolution. (A red diamond choker is mentioned in a short story The Bloody Chamber by A. Carter that is based on the story of Bluebeard.)

During the Victorian era a thin red or black ribbon symbolized prostitution. But at the same time they were worn by respectable women too, even by Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901), but they usually were from more luxurious materials. The chokers can also be seen on the paintings of ballerinas by Degas. In this case the chokers might have an aesthetic purpose but they also might give away a hidden message – they might symbolize that the ballerinas who came often from poor families were mistresses of well-off men who helped them financially to continue their careers. (This is described in a book called The Painted Girls by C. M. Buchanan – unfortunately I would not recommend this book because some characters acted unbelievably stupid, which made me frustrated.)
Během viktoriánské éry symbolizovala červená a černá stužka prostituci.

The really well of and fashionable ladies were wearing rows of pearl or diamond chokers on their necks. This trend could be seen here and there throughout the history (the paintings are there as a silent witness) but it was popularized by Alexandra of Denmark (1844 - 1925), the spouse of the heir of Queen Victoria, who had a scar on her neck and drew an inspiration from Indian women who were wearing chokers.
A lot of inspiration can be drawn from various tribes. The most extreme custom connected to chokers can be seen on Myanmar/Burma. The women of the Kayan Lahwi tribe wear rows of brass chokers that optically lengthen the neck, which is why they are sometimes nicknamed “giraffe women”. These necklaces gradually deform the collar bone and compress the rib cage. The neck muscles atrophies in a short time because these necklaces are seldom taken away.
