Straws - How to turn ecology into luxury product

At the beginning of this article I just wanted to ask: How many holes does a straw have? Does straw have one or two holes? Yes, this seems to be the most pressing problem when it comes to straws. At least in the online world. Meanwhile in the real world we are concerned with their impact on the environment. We were alarmed by the harmfulness of the straws about two years ago when photos of a sea turtle surfaced, the sea turtle had a straw stuck in its nose.

The pioneer in the fight against the single-use plastic straws in the USA is California with its California straw law that was signed in September 2018. People will not be getting a single-use plastic straw automatically with their drink, they would have to ask for them. I am not sure how much will this really have an impact and will really reduce their use, but it is the beginning. European union is preparing a law that would ban single-use plastic straws but also other single-use plastic things (plastic dishes, balloon sticks, cotton buds). At the same time, they want to really ban them not just reduce their use and replace them with paper ones that are not that harmful to our environment. But I am asking a question - did you ever try to drink a cocktail through a paper straw? A paper straw gets pulpy quite quickly, so it is unusable. It only makes you drink quicker because you don´t want to drink pulpy paper with your drink. So, it is actually better not to use any straw. But then - this means the end for the x-litre cocktails that are for the whole table and are drank the whole evening because these huge cocktails had usually a bunch of long single-use plastic straws in them. This is a bit half-baked.

Meanwhile a few straw makers who are creating durable straws (well, if you clean them properly) surfaced. These straws are made of metal or glass. You can see the metal straws at hip cafés that try to maintain image of trendy place with sustainable lifestyle. Ecology and slow fashion trend are both going against fashion, logically. Fashion is after all living from consumerism and consumerism is condemned by by ecologists and fans of slow fashion. But even these trends can be swallowed up by the consumerism and luxury products can be created as an answer to these trends. The luxury brand Viktor & Rolf´s presented during haute couture fashion week in spring 2017 an upcycled gown. Secondhand is getting on fashion shows of haute couture. Some designers are approaching the ecology trend in a different way. Let´s keep our eye on the durable straws. The jeweler Stephen Webster created a straw he named "The last straw" from silver. You can buy it for £145. There are also luxury glass straws made of Murano glass by Duncan Campbell ans Charlotte Rey. the set of 6 straws costs £50. As you can see even ecology can become a luxury item and can be turned into consumerism but instead of 926 single-use plastic straws from Ikea (a set of 100 straws is sold for £0,90) you will buy one luxurious straw made of Murano glass for £8,3.

  1. I've just come back from a holiday in the Netherlands and am impressed with the metal straws I saw there. So I'm getting one of those and I'll keep it in my rucksack

    1. To have a personal durable one is nice I think, but at the same time I think I would not have it with me when needed. I am glad I am not forgetting about purse, keys and mobile :D
