Funkcionalism in Prague - the French schools at Dejvice

Thanks to the Open House Praha I was able to visit a functionalist gem in Prague, Dejvice. For a few years already, the Open House Praha is opening buildings that are usually closed to the public. The main event takes place at a spring weekend. However, this year the organizers opened a few more buildings during autumn because we celebrated 100 years of the republic.

Díky akci Open House Praha jsem měla tuto neděli možnost navštívit funkcionalistický skvost v Praze, Dejvicích. Open House Praha již několik let zpřístupňuje obvykle zavřené prostory návštěvníkům zdarma. Většinou se jedná o víkendovou akci na jaře. Letos se ale organizátoři rozhodli na podzim přidat otevření několika dalších prostorů v rámci výročí 100 let republiky.

The premises of the functionalist French schools were opened this Sunday. The schools were designed by Jan Gillar (1904-1967) who won the competition with his design in 1931, the construction of the buildings was finished in 1934. A nursery school and a grammar school were in these buildings. There should have also been a building with a dormitory but that was not built in the end because of lacking finances. Gillar designed not only the buildings but also the interiors that are there till these days. The schools have huge windows that let the natural light in and they are also surrounded with trees, which creates an illusion of being in nature.

Areál funkcionalistických Francouzských škol, který byl otevřen tuto neděli, byl navržen architektem Janem Gillarem (1904-1967), který vyhrál vypsanou soutěž na výstavbu škol v roce 1931, a byl dokončen v roce 1934. V areálu se nacházela mateřská školka a gymnázium. Původně zde měla být i budova internátu, ale na její výstavbu ji nebyly finance. Gillar navrhl nejen budovy, ale i zařízení interiérů, které je v budovách dodnes. Školy mají velká okna, takže se do nich dostává hodně denního světla, a navíc je obklopena stromy, které vytvářejí iluzi umístění v přírodě.

It is interesting that there is a school till these days. There were also many people among the visitors who used to go to the school here when young.

Zajímavostí je, že škola zde funguje i dnes. Mezi návštěvníky byli mnozí pamětníci, kteří sem chodili do školy.

The interior of the school is in light blue colour. I must admit that when I first saw that I thought there is a special school for handicapped located, because the light blue colour felt too forcibly unagressive and calming. Later on, it felt like there must be some "posh" private school, but as far as I know this is not true. I am not saying this to criticize the interior, it is beautiful, but it felt so out of place when compared to the schools where I went. It was quite a shock to see such an elegant, airy, clean school. I haven´t even noticed any scribbles on the banks.

Interiér školy je laděný do bledě modré barvy. Musím přiznat, že to působí nezvykle, zvláště když si vzpomenu na to, jak vypadaly interiéry škol, do kterých jsem sama chodila. Nejprve jsem si myslela, jestli zde není nějaká zvláštní škola pro hendikepované, protože to množství světle modré barvy na mě vytváří až násilně neagresivní a uklidňující dojem. Potom jsem si říkala, jestli tahle škola není nějaká "posh" soukromá, ale zdá se, že nikoliv. Tímto nechci kritizovat její interiér, je krásný, jen ve srovnání s tím, co znám, je to docela šok, jak může být škola taková elegantní, vzdušná, čistá. Ani jsem si nikde nevšimla pokreslených lavic apod.

We did not have luck with the weather, but the view from the rooftop was still interesting. Usually the Prague castle can be seen from here.

Počasí nám moc nepřálo, ale i tak byl rozhled ze střechy školy zajímavý. Obvykle prý bývá vidět i Pražský hrad.
