The fake world of Instagram

I finally got the change to watch both documentaries about the Fyre festival (Fyre (2019); Fyre Fraud (2019) that entered the history as an example of catastrophic organization and fraud on investors and attendees. The whole situation around it is so fascinating. The Fyre festival should have been a new and better Coachella, what is Coachella?

Coachella is a music festival, but for those who are watching it from afar and via social media, Coachell alooks like an event where everyone goes to take pics in a crazy outfit. They take pics with the carousel. They take pics with a few friends and if lucky with some celebrity. The original purpose of the festival - to enjoy the live music - got kinda lost and it looks like this is an event that is only made to take pics for Instagram. Then a ton of videos emerge on YouTube criticizing Coachella (it is too hot or cold in the desert, you have to walk long distance to get there, everything is overpriced, technical issues during concerts, dust in the air, ...), but they will go again, because it is kinda expected and part of the image of the influencer. Are you an influencer? The you need to take a pic at Coachella and share it on Instagram. Sometimes you can hear stories about people that go there for one day with a bag full of outfits to take pictures in them and then pretend they were there the whole time.

The Fyre festival should have been something similar. Everything started with a really wel done ad that presented the Fyre as a great party on a cool place with possibility to mingle with top models and influencers. The hype around Fyre spread like a fire ;) thanks to the influencers that shared the ad on their social media. But then the organizers underestimated everything and the Fyre fest never took place. Or did? It was an interesting idea that the Fyre fest actually took place when the promos were created. At that time a lot of photos and videos were created and shared, which made people want this experience too. Isn´t it a bit naive to think that the attendees will have the same experience as the models in the ads when they arrive with hundreds of other attendees at the place? Isn´t it naive to think they will mingle with Kendall and Bella? But still, even if Fyre really took place as was (hopefully) originally intended I believe Instagram would be full of gloryfying pics from the event even though the reality would be different (if you were as intrigued by the pigs as me, watch this part of a vlog  that shows the not-so-glamorous reality...).

This brings me to another documentary movie called #FollowMe (2019). This documentary is showing the reality behing Instagram accounts. For example a boy that has pictures taken with a hamburger infront of the burger bistro. Other customers sitting at the next table are staring at him. When the photoshoot is done he tosses the burger because he does not intend to eat it, maybe next time. Therole of the burger was to be just a prop, not food. Do you feel the fakeness here? Why take pictures with a burger if you are not really eating it? Why show a lifestyle you don´t really have? And this is "normal" with some influencers, they present to their followers via Instagram fragments of their (fake) lifestyle. They would rent an atelier to look like they are flying somewhere in style. They would save and reuse multiple times paper bags from big brands to take pictures with them everywhere (like Iva Pazderková´s character "pindulína" - let´s translate it as pussyllerina - it is a humorous manual how to become a sugarbaby) or travel with empty bottles of champagne (IDK but I would be pissed to have something that unuseful with me, I´d better buy a full bottle of a local product and bring it home instead). It is all just for the effect, just for the photo.
A to mě přivádí k dalšímu dokumentárnímu filmu s názvem #FollowMe (2018).

The young generations nowadays rather collect experiences than things. But the influencers will still show you their collection of Chanel bags, but they will show them at nice places in fashionable metropolis or exotic destination. And this is the experience, the lifestyle that their followers aspire to, even though they don´t know that the numerous shopping trips to Paris was just one two-day trip a year ago that was spent going here and there to take as many pics in as many outfits as possible. Did you know that lately there is a challenge I faked a trip to X going around on YouTube? Yes, it is quite easy to fake things for the social media.
