Carnivorous unicorns

There are a lot of people fascinated by unicorns. Cute unicorn doodles are on many items - be it clothes or lifestyle products. Unicorns are usually associated with purity and positive things. The myth around the existence of unicorns is connected with a real animal - a narwhal - a mammal that lives in the sea and has a large tusk on its forehead. These tusks are often a part of collections at castles and their owners presented them as a real tusk of a unicorn that they found or killed on a hunt.

Although the image of a radiant horse with a tusk is fascinating and pretty, I never believed that such an animal (with a tusk) would be so kind and even helpless as presented in movies or literature. I really wanted to see them more wicked and able to defend themselves (Why would they have the tusk, huh? Other animals are using it to their advantage!) this "wish" was fulfilled in the book Foxglove summer by Ben Aaronovitch (this book is the 5th volume of The Rivers of London). Sadly, that is almost the only interesting thing about the book (ok, the kidnapping line is also interesting, but again - I want more info!), but his interpretation of unicorns is well worth the read.

  1. I've never understood the unicorn obsession either. I get what it stands for but it's a horse with a horn, practically a my little pony toy. It's not unique anymore when a million people have them. I'm waiting for the time a cockatrice or a kracken becomes the latest thing trending in mythical creatures

    1. Well, you could find some Lovecraft inspired things, usually handmade by fans. But yeah, this trend is for sure not as omnipresent as the unicorns. I guess it is because horses in general are quite a popular animal, put some sparkles and pastel colours on it and a horn and bam! Although I think that unicorns were recently replaced by flamingos on the popularity ladder. They are literally everywhere now. I liked them, but now I would feel like a part of the crowd.
