The state of secondhand shopping in Czechia

I was amazed when I found out a few years ago that by frequenting secondhand shops I can buy stylish things for nice prices. From this period, I have blouses made of madeira, evening dress heavily embroidered with beads and sequins, perfectly fitting jackets from pricier brands, an evening handbag fully embroidered with beads, etc. Real treasures, that I would be willing to pay even a bit more than what was their price. During these days I was going to secondhands at least once a week to go through the piles of stuff and if lucky buy something gorgeous.

Když jsem před pár lety zjistila, že chozením do secondhandů mohu najít stylové věci za pár kaček, byla jsem nadšená. Z této doby mám secondhandové blůzy z madeiry, večerní šaty pošité korálky a flitry, perfektně sedící saka od dražších značek, psaníčko kompletně pošité korálky atp. Prostě poklady, za které bych byla ochotna zaplatit i více, než na kolik byly naceněny. Jeden čas jsem secondhandy v okolí obrážela aspoň jednou týdně, abych se těmi hromadami zboží prohrabala a případně si něco suprového odnesla.

Last few months I am not going to secondhands that often anymore, because finding something pretty became a rarity. I realized that this market segment turned into a real business. Shops started to offer clothes of inferior quality or terrible designs and at the same time they increased the prices. If there are sales in normal clothes shops, then the price for a new piece is often the same as the price for a secondhand item. Shopping in secondhands turned (for me) into going through mediocre worn-out clothes with a hefty price tag (when you compare the quality and the price), it is not a cheerful hunt for something unusual.

V posledních měsících však už tolik do secondhandů nechodím, protože jsem měla čím dál tím méně štěstí na něco pěkného. Prostě jsem si všimla, že se z toho stal business. Obchody začaly navážet čím dál větší hadry, které už mají své nejlepší období dávno za sebou a navíc jsou zcela designově průměrné nebo jde o vyloženě nepovedené designy. Zároveň začali tyto hadry naceňovat na mnohem vyšší ceny. Často, pokud jsou v obchodech s oblečením zrovna slevy, to vyjde cenově nastejno se zcela novým zbožím. Nakupování v secondhandech se (alespoň u mě) proměnilo z nadšeného hrabání s vidinou, že možná objevím něco nezvyklého, v prohrabování se zcela průměrným obnošeným zbožím s nadsazenou cenovkou.

I was wondering how we got here? It looks like people noticed that there is a demand for secondhand clothes. Be it because of tight finances or ecological tendencies of the customers. Unfortunately, it looks like the entrepreneurs started overstretching this - they now offer garbage (that is maybe fit for recyclation of textiles) and they try to milk as much money from it as possible. Today I have seen an ad on Facebook for some secondhand eshop that was selling secondhand clothes for higher prices than was the original price for the same new item - really! These were some baby clothes from a cheap German chain store (that we have in Czechia) and some mums in the comments were pointing out that they bought the same thing for a fraction of the secondhand´s price. I am only waiting for the moment when the customers of secondhands go to a normal shop with new clothes and realize that they are buying mediocre fugly clothes for a price of new clothes. (And yes, it makes me sad.)

Přemýšlela jsem nad tím, čím to? Zdá se, že si asi více lidí všimlo, že o secondhandy je zájem. Ať už z finančních důvodů nebo kvůli ekologickému smýšlení zákazníků. Bohužel mám pocit, že tito podnikatelé už to trochu přestřelili a začali nabízet opravdu odpad, který by se možná hodil jen na nějakou recyklaci, a ještě se z toho snaží vydojit co nejvíc peněz. Zrovna dneska se ke mě na Facebooku dostala reklama na nějaký online secondhand, který nabízí secondhandové zboží klidně i za několikanásobnou pořízovací cenu nového kusu - fakt! Šlo o nějaké dětské oblečky z levného německého řetězce, který  máme i v Česku, a maminy se v komentářích rozčilovaly, že přesně tyhle koupily za méně než byly nabízeny v online secondhandu. Fakt jen čekám na okamžik, kdy zákaznice secondhandů zabloudí do normálního obchodu s oblečením, a zjistí, že si za stejnou cenu mohou místo hnusných sepraných hadrů mohou koupit zcela nové oblečení. (A ano, je mi z toho smutno.)
