My long days at Karlovy Vary Film Festival

KVIFF... this year in the name of stripes and with the striped socks from the festival merch a bit baseball look. I am not sure if it was for the omnipresent stripes of the festival design, but I have really noticed quite a lot of people adhering to this "dresscode". Not sure if this was just a coincidence or if they did it on purpose to match the festival look. To be honest, I haven´t even thought about something like this when packing my things.

MFFKV... letos ve znamení proužků, po obléknutí proužkovaných ponožek z festivalového merche tak trochu baseballový look. Nevím, jestli to bylo tím všudypřítomným proužkovým vizuálem, ale opravdu jsem si všimla, že mnoho návštěvníků dodržovalo tento proužkový "dresscode". Buď je to náhoda, anebo si na tom opravdu dali záležet. Mě tohle třebas ani nenapadlo, když jsem si balila věci.

This year the area in front of the Thermal changed - it was overruled by the Pilsner Urquell. There used to be beer Lobkowicz, Fruitisimo, big pans with "festival" food (noodles etc.). This year it was just tents with Pilsner, where they had good and a bit too cold beer (it was a bliss though in the hot weather), but I lacked a bit of diversity when it came to the selection of beers (only one). It was nice to find out that the place where a closed pizzeria Vertigo used to be is now a new restaurant Srdcovka. In the end we went there the most.

V letošním roce došlo k velké změně prostoru před Thermalem - kompletně jej ovládl Pilsner Urquell. Dříve zde bylo pivo Lobkowicz, Fruitisimo, obrovské pánve s "festivalovým" jídlem (nudle apod.). Letos jen stany Pilsneru, kde bylo sice dobré a až podchlazené pivo (v tom horku fajn věc), ale chyběla mi širší nabídka druhů piv (bylo jen jedno). Příjemným zjištěním bylo, že na místě již nějakou dobu uzavřené pizzerie Vertigo se objevila nová restaurace Srdcovka. Nakonec jsme chodili nejčastěji sem.

This year we stayed for five days and made it to 16 movies. I was quite shocked by the fact that we got to 4 movies on the first day when we arrived. Four movies is normal for us when we are there for the whole day (not when we are arriving or departing). Our pre-selection of movies was very good. Of course there were some not that great movies in the bunch, but most of them were really good. I would like to know if this year they picked really good movies in general to be screened or if we were really lucky with our pre-selection. I remember one year (about five years ago?) when the movies we saw were good, but rather average. This year I have to say again, that there movies that I would put into the Midnight screening section (Koko-di Koko-da and In Fabric) and not into the other sections where they were sitting. The Midnight screening section is becoming more and more bland for my taste.

Tento rok jsme na festivalu pobyli pět dní a stihli jsme celkem 16 filmů. Byla jsem celkem v šoku, že hned první den, kdy jsme přijeli, jsme nějakým zázrakem stihli čtyři filmy, což je naše norma v normální den, kdy tam jsme po celou dobu. Letos se nám předvýběr filmů, které bychom rádi viděli, celkem povedl. Samozřejmě, že se našly i slabší kousky, ale vyvážily to jiné opravdu dobré filmy. Zajímalo by mě, jestli jsme měli fakt šťastnou ruku anebo byl obecně výběr filmů na letošním festivalu dobrý. Pamatuji totiž jeden ročník (asi před pěti lety?), kdy jsme viděli sice dobré filmy, ale nebyla jsem z nich zas tak moc odvařená. Avšak i letos jsem musela konstatovat, že jsme narazili na filmy, které byly uvedeny v jiných sekcích, ale spíše by se mi hodily do Půlnoční sekce (třebas Koko-di Koko-da nebo Takové krásné šaty). Půlnoční sekce poslední dobou nějak vyměkává.

And finally a little socially-political commentary. I find out that some celebrities have sent an open letter to the president of the festival. They criticized the festival because they didn´t like some sponsors (Czech Arms Factory) and the fact that politicians are invited to the festival too. I would just like to say that although this is a good point why are these celebrities accepting their invitations to the festival and parties? Who paid for these invites? The sponsors. So, why not boycott them? Because they wouldn´t "be seen" at this high profile event?

A nakonec trochu sociálně-politický komentář. Dozvěděla jsem se o tom, že některé celebrity sepsaly otevřený dopis řediteli festivalu, ve kterém kritizovali to, že je festival sponzorován sponzory, kteří se jim nelíbí (Česká zbrojovka) a že jsou na festival zváni politici. Zde bych chtěla podotknout, že je to sice dobrý postřeh, avšak pokud jim to opravdu tak moc vadí, proč sami pozvání na festival přijímají a chodí na sponzorované party? Kdo toto pozvání a party zaplatil? Asi sponzoři. Tak proč je nebojkotovat? Protože by "nebyli viděni" na takové důležité události?
