Beauty conspiracy: Paraben free hysteria?

Is "paraben free" hysteria helping companies sell more products? The other day I have stumbled upon an interesting conspiracy theory in the world of beauty. When I go to a drug store and notice a paraben free option of a product I am looking for, I will take it. I am not an expert in cosmetics´ ingredients, so I make my choices based on what I have heard or read somewhere. Then I test the product and decide if I will buy it again or if it did not feel right, so I will test something else next time. But I have already given my money to the company, even if the product was not good, at least for me.

Je možné, že hysterie kolem produktů bez parabenů pomáhá společnostem prodávat více produktů? Nedávno jsem narazila na zajímavou konspirační teorii v beauty světě. Když jdu do drogerky a všimnu si, že některý produkt má alternativu bez parabenů, tak si jej vezmu. Rozhodně nejsem expert v ingrediencích v kosmetice, takže moje volba je založená na různých článcích, které jsem někde četla. Pak si produkt vyzkouším a rozhodnu se, jestli mi vyhovoval a jestli si jej proto koupím znovu, nebo zkusím něco jiného. V tomto okamžiku jsem ale už dala výrobci daného produktu vydělat.

For a few years already we have been hearing about parabens in cosmetics. The parabens act as a preservative and ensure that the cosmetics aren´t full of bacteria when you are using it. Some companies and natural cosmetics enthusiasts started to criticize the use of parabens and they suspect that parabens are not good at all for humans, that they even might cause cancer. At the same time this haven´t been tested enough and parabens are still used and allowed in cosmetics.

Posledních pár let se o parabenech v kosmetice hodně mluví. Parabeny jsou konzervační látky, které mají zajistit, aby se v kosmetice nemnožily bakterie. Některé značky a výrobci přírodní kosmetiky parabeny kritizují a tvrdí, že používání kosmetiky s parabeny může být škodlivé, někdy mluví i o tom, že by mohly způsobovat rakovinu. Zároveň však zde není dostatek studií, které by toto potvrdilo či vyvrátilo, a proto je používání parabenů v kosmetice nadále povoleno.

So, what is the conspiracy theory? The theory is, that some companies did chime into this paraben hysteria, because they realized it would be good for their business. Not only can they profile themselves as more "green" and "healthy" brand, but it is a money grab too, because cosmetics without parabens will get spoilt sooner and therefore the customers need to buy it more often. The "healthier" and "better" formula will also cost the customer more.

Někteří mají podezření, že některé společnosti tuto hysterii namířenou proti parabenům podporují proto, že si spočítaly, že to bude dobré pro jejich business Nejen, že se budou moci profilovat jako "zelené" a "zdravější" značky, ale také, že se to finančně vyplatí. Kosmetika bez parabenů se rycheji kazí, má kratší dobu trvanlivosti, a proto si ji budou muset zákazníci častěji kupovat. Navíc za to "zdravější" a "lepší" složení si zákazník připlatí.
