My evenings with Sabrina (the teenage witch)

The volume 1 collection of the oldschool Archie comics Sabrina the Teenage Witch from 1962-1972 recently arrived to my mailbox. Since then this is how I spend my evenings - reading comics (and dozing off while reading it :D). When I was a kid I really liked the sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003). My favourite charater till these days is Salem the cat. Last year a reboot of Sabrina premiered on Netflix in two parts, in autumn 2018 and in spring 2019. It is a dark series inspired by Sabrina comics reboot from 2014 (till present; although there are only 8 issues of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics and it is considered an ongoing series, it looks like it is improbable we will see another issue soon as the creator is very busy with other projects). Only after watching the Netflix Sabrina I found out that there are actually comics that precede these series. And that there are also some cartoon series! It is much bigger than I ever thought!

Nedávno mi v poště přistál první díl kolekce starých Archieho komixů Sabrina the Teenage Witch z 60. a 70. let. Od té doby s knihou trávím své večery - čtu ji (a usínám u ní :D) Jako malá jsem měla ráda sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003). Mou oblíbenou postavou je dodnes kocour Salem. Vloni jsme se dočkali temnějšího rebootu Sabriny od Netflixu a to hned ve dvou částech, na podzim 2018 a na jaře 2019. Tento reboot byl inspirovaný rebootem komixu z roku 2014 (až dodnes; ačkoliv je jen 8 dílů Chilling Adventures of Sabrina a jde o "živý" projekt, s dalšími díly se už moc nepočítá, protože jejich tvůrce je zaěstnán jinými projekty). Teprve po zhlédnutí Netflixové Sabriny jsem se dozvěděla, že seriálům předcházely komixy. A že také existuje kreslený seriál! Sabrinin svět je mnohem větší než jsem si myslela!

It is interesting to flip through the pages of the comics collection, because you can definitely see some development in art and storylines. Here and there you can tell that certain strip was created by someone else and not the usual artist. It is interesting how the looks of Sabrina develops - in which year she suddenly has noticeable big boobs (1963), in which year her skirts get shorter (1969), or when emphasis on longer legs is introduced (1970) etc. Sometimes the comics strips have a manga vibe, I guess that some poses remind me of manga. But also the development of the storylines. They are quite similar and repetitive, but at the beginning (till cca 1969) it was almost always about Sabrina mixing up her spells and doing something she did not want and then her friends or herself scolding her that she goofed again. (This started getting on my nerves soon...). Now I am in a period when malicious spells are actually doing good or they are getting back at those who cast them (the aunties).

Je zajímavé chronologicky procházet tyto komixy a všímat si vývoje umění i příběhů. Občas si všimnete, že některý příběh byl nakreslený jiným autorem než obvykle. Vzhled Sabriny se postupně mění - v jednom ročníku si všimnete, že má najednou výraznější větší prsa (1963), pak najednou nosí kratší sukně (1969), v dalším roce je důraz na příliš dlouhé nohy (1970) atd. Někdy komixy mají nádech mangy, asi mi ji připomínají některé pózy. Ale i formička příběhů se vyvíjí. V prvních letech (do asi 1969) vždy svá kouzla popletla a vyčarovala něco jiného než chtěla a pak jí přátelé (nebo ona sama sobě) vyčítají, jak to popletla. (Tohle se mi brzy začalo zajídat.) Teď jsem v období, kdy škodící kouzla omylem pomáhají anebo se vracejí (tetičkám).

What makes me wonder are the aunts though. They are drawn and act like real witches - pointy hats, big nose, crazy hair, moles. How did they become so "normal" and lovable in the series? In the retro comics they are totally different!

Co mě překvapuje jsou ale tetičky. Jsou naktesleny a chovají se jako typické čarodějnice - mají špičaté klobouky, velký nos, neposlušné vlasy, znaménka. Jak se z nich staly ty "normální" a oblíbené tetičky v seriálech? Ve starém komixu jsou naprosto jiné!
