Geeking out: What are NFT CryptoKitties

Recently I thought that I might start a new column on my blog dedicated to stuff I am geeking out about. Since I am currently listening to more podcasts than ever I am sliding into various rabbit holes to widen my horizons. What recently caught my attention is the topic of NFT art that currently created a bubble on the marked, so it is selling for high prices. Once i dived into this I have almost imediately met the most medialized NFT artpiece(s) - the CryptoKitties and the NFT art made by Grimes. Today´s blog post will be dedicated to CryptoKitties.

Před nedávnem jsem si říkala, že bych mohla svůj blog obohatit o kategorii geeking out. Poslední dobou poslouchám hodně podcastů, které mně hodně rozšiřují horizonty vědění. Co mě teď zaujalo je téma NFT umění, které v současnosti vytvořilo docela bublinu na trhu, prodává se za poměrně vysoké částky. Jakmile jsem se začala o toto téma více zajímat, vyskočily na mě nejvíce medializované příklady NFT - CryptoKitties a umění vytvořené Grimes. Dnešní článek se bude věnovat CryptoKitties.

My first encounter with CryptoKitties was on Twitter - it was a tweet with a picture of colourful drawing of a cat and a note that they are currently selling for up to about 300 USD. But the priciest one is 170K USD. This shocked me. It was at a time I was not informed about the meaning of NFT. And I was like: "Wtf? I want to understand this phenomenon."

Prvně jsem se s CryptoKitties setkala na Twittru - byl to tweet s obázkem barevné kreslené kočky a bylo u ní napsáno, že v současnosti se některé prodávají za 300 dolarů. Nejdražší kotě však stojí 170 000 dolarů. Tohle mě celkem šokovalo. Tehdy jsem ještě neměla ponětí o konceptu NFT, takže má reakce byla: "Cože? Tohle mi vysvětlete."

CryptoKitties were created in 2017, it is a virtual pet, a collectible game of sorts (you can buy and sell them and breed them), and each kitty has an algorithmic token assigned to her, so when they are bred, the algorithm will decide the look of their kitty child. Some combinations will of course create a rare kitty, which will have higher value than other kitties, that are not so rare. Similarly to collectible trading cards of your favourite sport or Pokémon or whatever there was (do you remember pogs? :D).

CryptoKitties vznikly v roce 2017, je to virtulní mazlíček, jakási sběratelská hra (můžete je nakupovat, prodávat, množit je), každé kotě má připsaný unikátní algoritmus, který rozhodne o vzhledu koťat vašich koček, když je začnete množit. Některé kombinace rodičů samozřejmě vytvoří hodnotnější potomky, protože budou vzácnější než jiná koťata. Podobně jako u sběratelských kartiček sportovců, Pokémonů nebo čehokoliv jiného, co se sbíralo (pamatujete na pogy? :D).

But how can a picture on the internet be rare, you ask? This is because a set amount of copies of this image was registered on blockchain, so when you buy the image of a kitty, you will become the owner of this digital image. Yes, there might be thousands of pictures of this kitty on the internet, but the original is only one (or whatever number of originals was registered on the blockchain). To translate this into the world of tangible items - it is similar to owning the original artpiece versus a poster of an artpiece - having the original Sunflowers by van Gogh hanging on your livingroom wall or a framed poster of the Sunflowers by van Gogh. Do you feel the difference now?

Jak ale může být obrázek na internetu vzácný, ptáte se? To je zajištěno provázáním na blockchain, kde jsou tyto obrázky registrovány, takže když si koupíte obrázek CryptoKitty, stáváte se majitelem tohoto origitálního obrázku. Ano, na internetu mohou být tisíce kopií tohoto obrázku, ale originál je jen jeden (nebo tolik, kolik jich bylo zaregistrováno na blockchainu). Abych toto převedla do reálného hmatatelného světa, je to stejný koncept jako když vlastníte originál obrazu nebo plakát s obrázkem originálu - jako když byste měli v obýváku na stěně pověšené van Goghovy Slunečnice, anebo zarámovaný plakát van Goghových Slunečnic. Cítíte ten rozdíl?

So yes, in the end it is a prestige thing, clout if you want to call it this way, but for certain people it can be also a hobby to collect these. In other cases this might be fully a speculative investment in the hopes that your rare piece of digital art will gain value in the future and you might sell it for more. Also currently new technologies are being created, so you would be able to hang your piece of digital art on your wall, because NFTs are becoming a trend.

Takže ano, nakonec jde o věc prestiže, ale pro některé lidi může jít o sběratelské hobby. Jindy může jít o druh investice a spekulace, se snahou dílo prodat později dráž a vydělat na něm. Zároveň jsou v současnosti vymýšleny nové technologie, které by vlastníkům NFT umožnili si své zakoupené originály vystavit doma, třebas na stěně, jelikož se z NFTs stává trend.

Výše popsané je jen škrábání po povrchu celého konceptu NFT a v budoucnosti se chci dostat hlouběji.
