The pain of SOLD OUT! limited editions in cosmetics

This article will be a bit retro... and at the same time a bit of rant. The main idea here is that I enjoy various special and limited editions. The problem is that they are limited. When I fall in love with a product then I would not be able to buy it again.
It usually takes me some time to really try a product and make up my mind that the product is really good for me. By that time (especially if it is a limited product) it is not available anymore. So I wanted to shed some tears because I will not be able to get another flacon of my favourite perfume. I tried googling but no, sold out. It is one of the old perfumes by Gwen Stefani when she had the Harajuku period. Yes, it is totally retro, it is a few years back... and now I am about to finish the bottle of the perfume and found out I will not be able to buy another one.
Did something similar happen to you too?
I also recently couldn´t buy a new Vichy Idéalia cream that I liked a lot so I had to buy a similar one (if I understood it correctly it was the old one with a bit changed formula).

limited editions, sold out, why, karl lagerfeld model co, kylie cosmetics, georgiana quaint, limited perfume, vichy idéalia cream, h&m collaboration

This is why I tried to think a bit more about the whole philosophy of limited editions and why are they even developed when only a few people can actually buy the products and when the product will be sold only for a moment.
I concluded that limited editions are a marketing trick to enhance people´s knowledge about a brand. When a famous person is collaborating with some brand (for eg. Karl Lagerfeld + Model co is discussed a lot now, or when H&M collaborates with a big fashion house) then they "exchange" their fans by bringing attention to the partner of the collab.

If you happen to sell you limited edition in minutes, which is often the case of Kylie Cosmetics, then you increase the chance that the media will cover this, which leads to more people hearing about the brand. Maybe you will also tweet out of frustration that you were not able to buy the lipstick again. Because of all this more people will hear about the product and maybe they will be curious enough to try to buy the next limited edition lipstick or mascara because it must be really good if everyone wants it!
Have you ever thought about the possibility that, and this will sound like a conspiracy theory ;), some limited editions are designed to be sold out within a few hours or days? You will see on the eshop that the product is sold out but you will never get the info that the 10 pieces (and I am exaggerating now, hopefully) that were produced and put on sale were sold out. Isn´t this a good method to create an allure of popularity and exclusivity and to make journalists write a few articles about it?

  1. I feel the same, limited editions (especially perfumes) are pretty sad when you can't get them anymore
