Travelogue from Krakow (Poland) - About culture & fashion

This article is focused on cultural differences and fashion that I noticed while in Krakow.

One evening it poured really a lot and we felt like two water goblins (my umbrella even got rusty while I was in Krakow) and we did not really want to go out so we turned on the TV... and we saw, or rather heard things. On all Polish channels there was a dabing read by one person. This is when I really understood why the Czech republic is considered a powerhouse when it comes to movie dabing. In Poland everything that is said in a movie is read by one person without an emotion or differentiation of the characters. This was a huge throwback to 1980s/90s in Czechia.

Když jeden večer hodně pršelo a my už  byli jak dva vodníci (během mého pobytu v Krakowě mi dokonce zrezl deštník) a nikam se nám  nechtělo, zapli jsme televizi... a viděli, nebo spíše slyšeli věci. Na každé polské stanici jsme se setkali s jednohlasným dabingem filmů. Teprve tehdy jsem si uvědomila, proč se říká, že Česko je velmocí dabingu. V Polsku celý text čte jeden hlas, bez emocí, bez odlišení postav. Tak trochu návrat do 80.-90. let v Česku.

From what I saw on the streets I would say that the Polish fashion is maybe 15 years behind Czechia. Women are wearing jeans a lot with T-shirts and a jacket. In this massive amount this was worn in Czechia before about 15 years. I noticed that the boom of fabric "backpacks" with strings did not come here yet. Every time I saw them it was on foreigners visiting Krakow. It was interesting to see that the foreigners wear a fanny pack as a handbag over their shoulder or across the chest. I have seen this trend on Instagram but it is not much present in Czechia.

Co jsem tak měla možnost pozorovat, tak v Polsku je teď móda, která u nás převažovala asi před 15 lety. Nosí se ve velkém džíny a trika se svetříkem, případně sáčkem. U nás se toto také nosí, ale už ne v takovém množství. Také sem ještě nedorazil boom látkových "batůžků" na šňůrkách. Pokaždé, když jsem je viděla, šlo o cizince. Jinak cizinci si zas oblíbili nosit ledvinku křížem přes hruď nebo přes rameno jako kabelku. Tuto módu jsem již zaznamenala na instagramu, ale do Česka se zatím nedostala.

I noticed that crop tops are very popular with Polish girls and even on those who are not really slim.

I was amazed by Polish girls´ hair. I often met ones that had really long and beautiful hair. They also seem to prefer blond shades but it can be natural as they are fair phototypes.

Co v Polsku hodně letí u holek, jsou krátké topy odhalující pupík. Docela mě překvapilo, že je nosí i holky, u kterých lze říci, že mají kila navíc.
Na Polkách jsem také hodně obdivovala vlasy. Dost často jsem potkala holky s opravdu dlouhými hezkými vlasy. Jinak mezi nimi hodně letí blond barvy, což ale může být tím, že jsou spíše světlé fototypy.

I really admired the house numbers in Krakow in the old city centre (but they also have them on some prefabricated blocks of flats). They are lamps with the house number written on them and they are light during night. I haven´t seen something similar in such an amount.

V Krakowě mě velmi zaujala čísla domů na starších domech (ale pozor, mají je i některé paneláky). Jde o lampičky, na kterých je číslo domu napsané a v noci svítí. V takovém (unifikovaném) množství jsem tohle ještě nikde neviděla.

When entering a church you of course have to be covered (the shoulders and knees should not be bare). For people who are not dressed appropriately they have prepared shawls to borrow when entering the a church. Compared to Italy I can see that there is not such a business around visiting churches. There you would have to buy a paper cape to cover yourself. They also did not collect any money for entrance in Krakow (or we were just lucky).

Při vstupu do kostela musíte být samozřejmě zahalení (nemáte mít holá ramena a kolena). Pro tento případ měli v Krakowě u vchodu na zapůjčení šátky. V porovnání s Itálií tedy navštěvování kostelů není takový business, protože tam turistovi vnutí k zakoupení jakýsi papírový kabátek. Také vstupy do kostelů se nevybírají (nebo jsme měli jen štěstí).

I really enjoyed streetart in Krakow, it is very inventive. I haven´t seen many graffiti and tags. They have lots of wallpaper streetart, ceramic tiles or other artifacts. I really loved to see and photograph them on the walls.
V Krakowě mi bylo moc sympatické streetart a jeho invenčnost. Na graffiti a tagy si zde tolik nepotrpí. Za to ale uvidíte papírové streetarty, keramické dlaždičky či výrobky. Bylo mi to velmi sympatické a neustále si něco na zdech fotila.

What struck me as strange was the amount of mirrors in pubs, restaurants, even at our 1+1 apartment we booked via Booking. The mirror might be creating an illusion of bigger space and more light but this was quite an extreme. Sometimes I wanted to go in a non-existent room or was giving way to myself :D
Za zvláštnost považuji množství zrcadel v hospodách, restauracích, ale i na ubytku (to bylo přes Booking v bytě 1+1). Zrcadla sice zvětšují prostor a přispívají k jeho prosvětlení, ale tohle byl celkem extrém. Občas jsem chtěla projít do místnosti, která neexistovala, nebo uhýbala sama sobě :D

Before we traveled to Krakow I created a list of vintage and secondhand shops I would like to visit. Only after our arrival I realized that Poland is quite a powerhouse when it comes to secondhands, there was a ton of them so one has to find their "own" shop. Generally Polish are selling various things. I was surprised that old ladies are standing on streets and are offering a bit of fruit or vegetables for sale, some were selling a few flowers, some even underwear (I am not sure if she got any customer though).

Před odjezdem do Krakowa jsem si udělala seznam vintage a secondhandových obchůdků, které jsem chtěla navštívit. Až na místě jsem si ale uvědomila, o jakou secondhandovou velmoc jde. Secondhandů najdete opravdu spoustu, takže si spíše musíte najít ten "svůj". Obecně se tu šmelí s ledasčím. Zaujaly mě třeba babky, co stály na ulici a prodávaly na zemi květiny, pár kousků ovoce či zeleniny, nebo dokonce i spodní prádlo (nevím kolik zákaznic paní nalákala ke koupi).

I did not visit only the touristic city centre of Krakow but also some housing estates. I really envy all those parks they have in Krakow with undestroyed banks. They also have a huge amount od newspaper and fruit+vegetables stalls, literally on every corner. The ground floors often have various shops in them. I am comparing this to Bratislava where these spaces were closed and unused.
V Krakowě jsme se nepohybovali jen v turistickém centru, ale podívali jsme se i na sídliště. Krakowanům závidím množství krásných parků s nezničenými lavičkami. Na sídlištích též mají množství využívaných novinových a zeleninových stánků na každém rohu. Také v přízemí paneláků jsou mnohdy obchody, které funguji. Když toto srovnám s Bratislavou, tak tam jsou obchody v přízemích paneláků léta zavřené a prostor je nevyužitý.

Some prefabricated blocks of flats had classicist columns and other unusual decorations. On others there were battlements on the roof and small towers as if on a medieval castle.

The houses in the centre of Krakow are very old and often in a need of reconstruction. Many times have I noticed that there are protecting nets to catch parts of the facade that is falling off. On many places reconstructions were in the works. Just an interesting note - the house we stayed at haf old wooden stairs and small courtyard balconies. 

Některé paneláky zavánějí podnikatelským barokem. Mají například klasicistní sloupy a další prvky. Jinde byla na vrchu cimbuříčka nebo věžičky jako na hradě. Prostě panelákový hrad.
Naopak domy v centru Krakowa jsou velmi staré a často potřebují rekonstrukci. Mnohokrát jsem si všimla, že na fasádách mají ochranné sítě, které zachytávají části opadávající fasády a chrání tak chodníky pod sebou. Na mnoha místech zároveň probíhaly velké rekonstrukce. Jen tak pro zajímavost - činžovní dům, ve kterém jsme byli ubytovaní, měl na chodbě staré prochozené dřevěné schody, ve vnitrobloku pak krátké dřevěné pavlače.

On our last evening in Krakow we took part in a bit crazy tram ride.  The driver obviously forgot to close the doors. It looks like there is no safeguard for such an eventuality. On the other hand the "open the door" button would not open the door while riding luckily.

Poslední večer jsme se zúčastnili trochu divoké jízdy tramvají, kdy řidič zapomněl zavřít dveře a jeli jsme s otevřenými dveřmi. V Krakowě zřejmě tramvaje nemají žádnou pojistku, která by toto automaticky pohlídala. Zároveň je ale třeba mačkat tlačítko na otevření dveří, a to za jízdy dveře neotevře.
