Interesting places to visit in Budapest

In this post I wrote about interesting places to visit in Budapest. Some of these are quite well known, but some are hidden gems off the beaten track that are not in every other guide book about Budapest.

Tento článek je o zajímavých místech v Budapešti. Některá z nich jsou dobře známá, ale ta další jsou skryté poklady, o kterých zatím nepíše každý druhý bedecker o Budapešti.

If your are into unusual things that are somewhat macabre and horror like, I would like to recommend the Epreskert garden to you. The gargen is located in a block bounded by Bajza utca, Lendvay utca, Munkácsy Mihály utca and Kmety utca. When you walk around this block you can peep in through the fence and see there various statues of people grouped together as if they were waiting for something. You can also notice a collection of human head statues. It looks a bit creepy as if some wizard turned people in stone and stores all of his victims here. So, what is this place really? It is a former artist's colony and belongs to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. I wasn't able to find out when and if this place is open to public, I have only found out that it is open on special occasions that were not further specified. But as I wrote, you can just walk around it and peep in through the fence and you will get the idea.
Pokud máte rádi podivné a až hororové věci, ráda bych vám doporučila zahradu Epreskert. Zahrada se nachází v bloku ohraničeném ulicemi Bajza utca, Lendvay utca, Munkácsy Mihály utca and Kmety utca. Když se projdete kolem tohoto bloku, můžete se skrz plot podívat dovnitř na sochy lidí, které jsou postavené do skupinek, jakokdyby na něco čekaly. Můžete si také povšimnout hromady soch lidských hlav. Je to trochu strašidelný pohled, jako na zahradě u čaroděje, který zde proměnil lidi v kámen. Co je to za místo? Jde o bývalou kolonii umělců, která v současnosti patří the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. Nepodařilo se mi najít informaci zda a kdy je zahrada otevřena pro veřejnost, jen zmínku, že se otvírá při zvláštních příležitostech, což nebylo více specifikováno. Jak jsem však již zmínila výše, stačí se projít kolem a namrknout skrz plot.

There are many thermal baths in Budapest. On this trip I have visited the Gellért thermal bath that are considered one of the most beautiful ones in the city. They are in Art Nouveau style mixed a bit with orientalism. They are truly beautiful. When going to the baths in Budapest you need to bring a swimming cap, flip flops and a towel, plus bikinis of course. Otherwise you might be forced to buy or rent these. We bought a ticket with a locker, which we found better than a ticket with cabin. The locker area is not separated but there are cabins for changing and separated showers, so no worries. To be honest this surprised us because we haven't been to a pool or spa with shared lockers and I noticed we weren't the only ones surprised. If you can, you should go to the baths on a weekday in the morning as early as possible, because later on it will get crowded. People start arriving around noon and it is soon packed. We arrived at 10 AM and left around 2 PM. When we arrived it was fine but before we left it really started getting crowdy. If you visit Gellért baths you shouldn't miss the adventure pool outside and the Wave that is created in it hourly (and yes, I flashed my boob).
V Budapešti je množství termálních lázní. Během tohoto výletu jsem navštívila lázně Gellért, které jsou považované za jedny z nejhezčích ve městě. Jsou v secesním stylu s trochou orientalismu a jsou opravdu krásné. Pokud se chystáte v Budapešti do lázní, vezměte si s sebou koupací čepici do bazénu, žabky a ručník a také plavky, samozřejmě. Jinak si to budete muset pronajmout nebo koupit v lázních. Koupili jsme si lístek se skříňkou n auložení věcí, což se nám zdálo jako lepší volba než lístek s kabinkou. Prostory šaten nejsou oddělené, ale jsou tam kabinky na převlečení a oddělené sprchy. Upřímně, tohle mě docela překvapilo, ještě jsem nebyla v bazénu nebo spa, kde by byly společné šatny a zřejmě jsem nebyla zmatená sama. Pokud můžete, vyražte do lázní ve všední den, co nejdříve ráno, protože časem se začnou dost zaplňovat. My dorazili v 10 ráno a odešli kolem druhé odpoledne.Když jsme přišli, bylo to celkem v pohodě, ale později se to fakt začalo zaplňovat. Pokud vyrazíte do lázní Gellért, neměli byste minout "adventure pool", kde každou hodinu pouští vlnu (a ano, z plavek mi při tom vyklouzlo prso).

When your feet get sore I would like to recommend a ride with the tram number 2. It goes along the bank of Danube River and you will see the Parliament, the castle on the opposite hill, the bridges and near the final stop you will also see some very modern buildings. I took this ride in the evening when it was already dark and the city lights were charming.

Až vás zabolí nohy, dejte si projížďku tramvají číslo 2 podél Dunaje. Uvidíte parlament, hrad na protějším kopci, mosty a u konečné i velmi moderní budovy. Projela jsem se tudy po setmění a osvětlené město bylo krásné.

Another interesting ride is to Széchenyi-hegy by a rack railway. This is a normal part of the public transport, so no special tickets are needed. The rack railway is ending on the hill Széchenyi. Here you can also take a ride with a small train operated by scouts (you will need to buy a special ticket for this one). The area on the hill is pretty and quiet, it must be nice living there.
Další zajímavostí je projížďka zubačkou na Széchenyi-hegy. Zubačka je normální součástí městské hromadné dopravy, takže na ni nepotřebujete speciální lístek. Konečná je na kopci Széchenyi, kde můžete přestoupit na úzkokolejný vlak řízený skauty (tady si už budete muset zakoupit speciální lístek). Tohle místo na mě působilo hezky a klidně, říkala jsem si, že se tu musí dobře žít.

A gorgeous Ervin Szabó Library shouldn't be missed by you if you are visiting Budapest. Check their website to see when they are open (Mon-Sat 10-20h), but don't get turned off if you see some signs on the doors that would indicate that it is closed. Just go in and ask. We asked if we can visit and in the end (for some unknown reason) we even didn't have to pay the visitor's pass (1000 huf). The old library is located in the 4th floor, but it is wort to see the spiral staircase next to the elevator too, or the dragons in the atrium of the building.
Překrásnou knihovnu Ervina Szabó byste neměli při své návštěvě Budapeště minout. Podívejte se na její otvírací hodiny na webu (měla by být otevřená v Po-So 10-20h) a nenechte se odradit případnými cedulemi na dveřích, které naznačují, že je zavřeno. Prostě vejděte a zeptejte se. My se zeptali, zda můžeme knihovnu navštívit a nakonec od nás (z nějakého neznámého důvodu) ani nechtěli zaplatit vstupné (1000 forintů). Stará knihovna je ve čtvrtém patře, ale vyplatí se vidět i točité schodiště vedle výtahu nebo draky v atriu budovy.

When I visited Budapest for the first time about three years ago, I have by chance stumbled upon the wonderful musical fountain on Margitsziget that is illuminated and "sings" and "dances" every evening during the summer. I think that this is something that shouldn´t be missed by anyone. If you are into these, then there is a huge Budapest sign just a few steps behind it and it is illuminated during the night too. (However for a selfie with the sign you should arrive during the day because during the night you will only take a photo of your silhouette.)

Když jsem Budapešť navštívila poprvé asi před třemi lety, náhodně jsem na Markétině ostrově narazila na fontánu, která je osvětlena a "zpívá" a "tančí" každý letní večer. Myslím si, že tohle by neměl nikdo minout. Navíc pokud se rádi fotíte u jmen měst, pak je jen pár metrů od fontány velký nápis Budapest, který v noci svítí. (Pro selfie s nápisem ale doražte přes den, jinak z vás bude vidět jen silueta.)

On my list of things to do on Sunday morning I had the Szimpla Kert market. Szimpla Kert is a ruin pub in a very hip area with many pubs and hipster shops. There was also a wonderful vintage shop Ever After and many more of them are located in the surrounding streets (I wrote more about vintage shops and my haul in a separate article). When we were roaming through the city looking for a restaurant to have a lunch and then looking for vintage shops around it I haven't realized that I have by a chance already found and peeped into Szimpla Kert a few days earlier, but at that time (it was Thursday afternoon) it was in the bar regime. Szimpla Kert is mostly known for its quirky and unusual look. It is located in an old building and it is heavily decorated in the junk or rat style, there is certainly a lot to see.
However, I have to add one more information about this place, that leaves a kinda bad taste in my mouth. My guilty pleasure is to go through reviews of places we visited and I also like to read through the one star reviews to see what people are complaining about, usually the complaints are laughable, which is why I like to read them. However with Szimpla Kert bar (I haven't found anything bad about the Szimpla Kert in the market regime on Sunday mornings) I have found a pattern that is repeating in different stories, so I am inclined to believe it and my personal beliefs tell me that I will not spend money here and support their toxic ways. So, if you want to visit the bar in the evening, I advise you to go through their one star reviews and decide for yourself if it is really worth the visit. This is the beauty of the internet, if there is a pattern of a bad behaviour it will not be unnoticed and soon it will boomerang back.
Na mém seznamu aktivit na nedělní ráno jsem měla trh v Szimpla Kert. Szimpla Kert je "ruinový bar" v ulici a potažmo i čtvrti, která je velmi trendy a plná hospod a hipster obchodů. Ve stejné ulici je i úžasný vintage obchod Ever After a další vintage obchody se nachází v okolních ulicích (o vintage obchodech a mých úlovcích jsem napsala samostatný článek). Když jsme se potloukali městem a hledali restauraci na oběd a pak vintage obchody v okolí, tak jsme Szimpla Kert náhodou našli a nakoukli dovnitř, když byla (ve čtvrtek odpoledne) v režimu baru. Szimpla Kert je známá svým neobvyklým vzhledem. Nachází se ve staré budově a uvnitř je výzdoba jako ve vetešnictví, je tu opravdu hodně detailů, které lze obdivovat.
Bohužel však, když už toto místo zmiňuji, musím upozornit na další věc, která mně toto místo celkem znechutila. Ráda si pročítám recenze o místech, která jsem navštívila, a to včetně nízkých hodnocení, protože chci vidět, na co si lidé dokážou stěžovat, což mi kolikrát připadá vtipné - a proto to čtu! Bohužel u Szimpla Kert v režimu baru (nenašla jsem stížnosti na trh, který se koná o nedělních dopolednech) jsem si všimla opakujícího se vzorce v popsaných zážitcích z tohoto místa, takže jsem tomu celkem začala věřit a mé osobní zásady mi říkají, že na takovém místě prostě nemohu utrácet své peníze a tak je podporovat. Takže, pokud si chcete vyrazit večer do baru, radím vám pročíst si nízká hodnocení a pak se rozhodnout, zda vám to stojí za návštěvu. Tohle je krása internetu... když se někde objeví toxický vzorec chování, tak se to brzy rozšíří šeptandou a vrátí se to jako bumerang.
