What surprised me in Budapest, Hungary

If you spend a few days in a different country, you will soon start noticing differences in local lifestyle and the overall genius loci. It is these details that I love noticing and that make my travelling experience full. (If you would like to check some unusual places in Budapest, check out my guide.) I like to search for local street art. In Budapest it looks like stickers are very spread and popular.

Když strávíte pár dní v jiné zemi, brzy si začnete všímat rozdílů ve stylu života místních lidí a i celkového ducha místa. Vždy se snažím všímat si detailů, protože právě detaily přispívají k mému zážitku z návštěvy. (Pokud byste se chtěli podívat na neobvyklá místa v Budapešti, mrkněte na má doporučení.) Ráda se dívám na místní street art. v Budapešti jsou teď hodně rozšířené samolepky.

 

It was an interesting experience to find out at the Gellért thermal bath that the money we used three years ago are not valid anymore, but we would be able to exchange them for valid ones at a post. And we successfully did so.

When we entered the Gellért baths and were looking for our lockers, we found put that the lockers are shared. In Czechia we have them in separated spaces for men and women. But no worries, there are changing cabins and separated showers. But it was still surprising and we weren´t alone, many people hesitated before entering as they thought they are entering the wrong space :D

V lázních Gellért nám začalo nečekané dobrodružství. Zjistili jsme, že peníze, které nám zbyly z návštěvy Maďarska před třemi lety, už nejsou platné. Naštěstí jsme později zvládli vyměnit za platné na místní poště.

Když jsme do lázní Gellért vstoupili a hledali naše skříňky, zjistili jsme, že prostor skříněk je společný pro ženy a muže. V Česku máme skříňky oddělené. Ale žádné strachy, jsou zde převlékací kabinky a oddělené sprchy. Stejně mě to ale překvapilo a nebyla jsem jediná, kdo váhal, zda vstoupit :D

While walking through the streets I noticed that they don´t have pedestrian crossings with an aural signalization. I am used to hearing to it, I myself sometimes react to it, so it was unusual not to hear anything.

Here and there you will notice that the pavements are a bit destroyed and have cracks that are painted with various colours. It is such a nice quirky detail!

Když jsme chodili po ulicích, všimla jsem si, že přechody nemají sluchovou signalizaci. Já už jsem na ni tak zvyklá, že jsem se na ni naučila reagovat. Bylo nezvyklé nic u přechodu neslyšet.

Sem tam jsou chodníky poničené a rozpraskané, ale jednotlivé kousky mají vymalované veselými barvami. Takový pěkný zvláštní detail!

Budapest is full of hidden pretty and quirky places, especially in the centre of the city. The blocks of flats have courtyards and courtyard balconies. Some courtyards are park-like or gardens. Others have little cafés there or even restaurants. It looks very picturesque or hipster depending on the place.

Budapešť je plná zastrčených zvláštních míst, obzvláště v centru. Činžáky mívají uvnitř dvory a pavlače. Některé dvory jsou jako malé soukromé parky a zahrádky. Jiné zde mají kavárnu nebo restauraci. Bývají velmi hezké až hipsterské.

Currently it looks like right now there is a burger boom in Budapest. You will find multiple burger bistros in each street, there are even some franchises. It reminded me the situation in Czechia when suddenly everyone had to have their burger and new burger places appeared like 'shrooms after rain. If this is the same trend, then it will get normalized soon. It was also interesting that some of them had a similar "hip" design like Czech burger bistros or pubs - wood, blackboards with menus and doodles drawn by a chalk.

V současnosti to vypadá, že je v Budapešti burgerový boom. Snad na každé ulici najdete hned několik burgráren, objevily se dokonce i franšízy. Připomnělo mi to situaci v Česku, kdy najednou musela mít každá restaurace svéo burgera a burgeárny se objevovaly jak houby po dešti. Pokud to bude mít stejný průběh, tak se to brzy zase překlopí do normálu. Zaujalo mě, že některé burgrárny měly i podobný trendy design jako české burgrárny a bistra - dřevo, a černé tabule, na kterých jsou namalované malůvky a napsané menu.

It is quite troublesome if you want to order another drink or pay at restaurants. I am not sure why this is. Maybe they want to make guests stay as long as possible to make the restaurant look full? However why not push them to buy more drinks? I don´t understand this. The waiters will just ignore you for a long time and this happened in various restaurants repeatedly, so it must be some local thing.

Je celkem problém objednat si v restauraci další pití nebo zaplatit. Nevím čím to je, možná chtějí, aby se hosté zdrželi co nejdéle a restaurace vypadala plná? Ale proč se nesnažit vydělat na dalším pití? Nechápu. Číšníci vás prostě budou ignorovat a stalo se nám to opakovaně v různých restauracích, takže to musí být nějaký místní zvyk.

If you want to try the local cuisine and for a good price, I recommend Gettó Gulyás restaurant. The combinations of food were unusual to me, like crumbled eggs with a chicken paprikash. Or egg barley with veal cheeks on red wine. I only know egg barley as part of soups and I eat crumbled eggs, but just with a bread.

Pokud máte zájem o ochutnání místní kuchyně, doporučila bych Gettó Gulyás. Zaujalo mě, jaké přílohy se dávají k jídlům. Například míchaná vajíčka ke kuřeti na paprice. Nebo drobení k hovězím líčkům na víné. Drobení znám asi jen jako součást polévek a míchaná vejce si dávám s chlebem, jen tak.

What I really liked in Budapest is the amount of trees and greenery. There are huge vertical flowerpots on pavements with begonias. In bigger streets there are big old trees that provide shadow. All this greenery is very pleasant. What is a shame is that they have nice banks around Danube river, but there are frequented street right beside them, so it is not a suitable place for walks or sitting and relaxing.

V Budapešti se mi líbilo, že mají hodně stromů a zeleně. Kde je chodník, tak se snaží dát alespoň velké stojany s begoniemi. Ve větších ulicích mají aleje se vzrostlými stromy, které poskytují příjemný stín. Všechna ta zeleň mi byla velice sympatická. Co trochu zamrzelo je, že mají pěkně udělané náplavky kolem Dunaje, ale hned vedle nich vedou velké silnice, takže nic moc na procházky a posezení v klidu.

They have amazing vintage shops in Budapest, which I already wrote about in this post. If you have the time to visit a few when you are there I definitely recommend them!

V Budapešti si nemohu vynachválit jejich vintage obchody, o kterých jsem se více rozepsala v tomto článku. Pokud budete mít čas, určitě se do nějakého podívejte!

V Budapešti také najdete kadeřnictví a holičství na každém rohu. V takové míře je v Česku rozhodně nemáme. Místní si zřejmě na tyto služby potrpí.

You will find hairdresser´s and barber shops on every corner in Budapest. We certainly don´t have so many of them in Czechia. It looks like the locals really like to use their services.

For a moment I even became "rich"! I am also adding the value of Euros, so you can be more in picture. I know that those who arrive in Czechia and need to exchange their Euros to get Czech Crowns feel similarly as me when I exchanged my Czech Crowns into Hungarian Forints. You suddenly have so much money, so many banknotes! Should I carry them around in a roll tied with an elastic band as some mafioso? :D Ok, rather not. I travelled to Budapest with about 60 000 HUF (= 181 EUR) in thousand forints banknotes.

Na okamžik jsem dokonce i "zbohatla"! Do tabulky s převody přidávám i eura, abyste byli více v obraze. Je mi jasné, že lidé z eurozóny se musí cítit podobně, když si vymění české koruny, jako já, když jsem si vyměnila forinty. Najednou máte totiž tolika peněz, tolika bankovek! Neměla bych je nosit svázané gumičkou v roličce jako mafiánský boss? :D Ok, radši ne. Do Budapeště jsem jela s 60 000 forinty (= 4 685 Kč) v tisícovkových bankovkách.
