Somehow I got into the BamaRush feed on my socials and I am intrigued. It revolves around the sorority recruitment process at the University of Alabama, USA, and the hashtags usually tied to the content are #BamaRush (for University of Alabama centered rush) or #RushTok (for the rushes in the USA in general).

Nějakým způsobem jsem se ocitla na ve feedu BamaRush na mých sockách a vlastně mě to celkem zaujalo. Vše se točí kolem náboru do sesterských organizací na univerzitě v Alabamě, USA, pod hashtagy #BamaRush (pro nábor na alabamské univerzitě) nebo obecněji #RushTok (pro nábory v USA obecně).

It caught my attention because in Czechia we do not have something similar and to my knowledge something like this isn´t really a tradition in other European countries either (possibly some posh boarding schools might hold some similarities, yet I kinda feel there is still some difference), but in the USA there is a huge tradition in these societies and all of this is somehow tied to Greece.

Téma mě zaujalo, protože v Česku nic podobného nemáme a pokud vím, tak ani v ostatních evropských zemích nic podobného není (možná, že nejpodobnější by mohly být nóbl internátní školy, ale i to podle mě není úplně ono a jsou v tom rozdíly), ale v USA jsou tyto spolky celkem velká tradice a odkazují se na staré Řecko.

The content is created by the potential new members (PNMs) that share their experience, outfits and preparations for joining sororities and most importantly Bid Day reveals where they find out which sorority house accepted them;

by current sorority sisters that show inside of the sorority houses and what their room looks like and provide the view into other side of the rush (let´s say the look behind the curtains of the preparations made by the sisterhood for the rush);

and by onlookers (either alumni, some advisors or just opinion pieces from unrelated people on what is going on as yes, here and there there is some drama and speculations involved if a popular creator does not get picked by their preferred sorority house - and this can be very important for some as the sorority houses have rankings, so some may be more preferred than the others as it is tied with better connections that can be built there and other opportunities. Sometimes also the topic of sorority blacklists appears and once again this sparks speculations as to who and why was possibly blacklisted from the rush).

Obsah na toto téma je tvořen potenciálními novými členkami ("PNMs") sesterství, které takto sdílejí své zážitky, outfity a přípravy na nábor a hlavně výsledek během tzv. Bid Day, kdy se dozví, zda a které sesterství je přijalo;

dalšími tvůrci jsou již stávající členky sesterství, které nabízejí opačný pohled i tak trochu do zákulisí na toto období náboru a na přípravy s tím spojené, ukazují sídla jejich sesterství, kde často bydlí nebo se minimálně scházejí, a chlubí se jak mají zařízené pokoje;

a poslední kategorií jsou ti, kteří celou věc jen z dálky pozorují (bývalé členky sesterství, poradci a lidé, kteří jen chtějí nasdílet svůj pohled na věc, protože sem tam se samozřejmě objeví nějaké drama a spekulace, na příklad, když populární PNM nedostane další pozvání do jejího vysněného sesterství nebo je z procesu zcela vyloučena. Dostat se do vysněného sesterství může být celkem důležité, protože jednotlivé organizace mají jiná hodnocení a některá jsou tak považována za lepší než jiná. A ta lepší mají většinou lepší známosti a příležitosti, které pak mohou spadnout členkám do klína. Občas se dokonce objeví i téma černých listin u sesterství a opět spekulace kdo a proč na nich je zapsaný a tudíž nemá vůbec procesu náborů šanci).

Almost like new season of Scream Queens / Skoro jak nová sezóna Scream Queens

Outfits-wise it is often like watching Scream Queens season 3 (that we never got). Everyone is dressed beautifully, very often in pastel colours and the prices of the outfits are sometimes jaw dropping - there is one creator (@DestineeMoreh) who is going through outfit videos and she breaks down the prices of everything in the video. Though I believe that is just the peak of the iceberg and the affordable, maybe even fast fashion brands are represented as well, just not with this creator that picks the almost outrageously expensive outfits that can be found under the #RushTok feed.

Pokud jde o outfity, tak je to skoro jak sledovat třetí sérii Scream Queens (kterou jsme nikdy nedostali). Všichni jsou krásně oblečení, velmi často v pastelových barvách a ceny outfitů jsou často horentní sumy - jeden tvůrce (@DestineeMoreh) prochází tato videa a nacení každou cetku, kterou má daná slečna na sobě, je fascinující to pozorovat. Toto je však jistě jen špička ledovce a najdou se i cenově dostupnější modely, možná i od značek s rychlou módou, tvůrkyně výše se spíše jen zaměřuje na modely pod #RushTok-em, za které se zaplatily tučné částky.

HBO´s Bama Rush documentary / Dokument Bama Rush od HBO

To provide further resources if the existence of this topic made you interested there is a recent Alabama sorority documentary titled “Bama Rush” that was released on HBO Max, which is supposedly about lives of several potential new members who are going through this intense process of the rush. The creators promise exploring themes of sisterhood, social belonging and the pressure of the beauty standards as sometimes it is mentioned that one also needs to have "the look" to be selected for a sorority. I haven´t seen it yet myself, though the discussion on Reddit was kinda underwhelming, it looks like the trailer promised more than the movie really delivered and nothing truly shocking was unveiled.

Pokud vás téma zaujalo, pak mohu doporučit (?) nový dokument o sesterstvích v Alabamě od HBO nazvaný Bama Rush, který má údajně pojednávat o životech uchazeček o členství v sesterstvích a o náročném procesu, kterým kvůli tomu procházejí. Tvůrci slibují vhled do témat sesterství, sounáležitosti a tlaku ideálů krásy, jelikož je občas zmiňováno, že uchazečka musí mít i určitý vzhled, aby byla vůbec přijata do sesterství. Dokument jsem zatím neviděla, ale diskuse na Redditu na něj zas tak moc slávy nepěla, trailer prý slíbil více než nakonec bylo ukázáno a diváci se nic šokujícího, co by již nevěděli, nedozví.
