Tim Burton’s latest film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) has been a highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice. Since I count myself among the Tim Burton fans (although I haven´t seen each and every one of his movies) I was excited about this sequel too and was checking for the early reviews while trying to avoid any spoilers as much as possible, especially since the moment I realized the consensus is that the movie is actually rather good.

Jelikož se počítám mezi fanoušky Tima Burtona (ačkoliv jsem neviděla všechna jeho díla), byla jsem na tento sequel celkem natěšená a sledovala první kritiky a hodnocení, ale zároveň s maximální snahou vyhnut se spoilerům, a to zejména od chvíle, kdy to vypadalo, že obecný konsesus je, že se tento film povedl a je dobrý.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has generally received positive reviews from critics. Many have praised Burton for recapturing the quirky, macabre charm that made the original film a beloved classic. Critics have highlighted Michael Keaton’s return in his role of the Betelgeuse character and I agree with them that he was able to perfectly recreate this character after decades. It feels as if there was no break between the movies, Betelgeuse is the same character even after this many years. The movie’s use of practical effects and the aesthetic have also been widely well-received (and I agree – I am in love with it), some even call Beetlejuice Beetlejuice one of the best sequels that happened in recent years. This sequel managed to resonate with both old fans and new audiences alike.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) získal převážně pozitivní recenze od kritiků. Mnozí Burtona chválili za to, že byl schopen uchopit a zopakovat kouzlo prvního snímku, který je již adorovanou klasikou. Kritici též vyzdvihli schopnost herce Michaela Keatona stát se opět Betelgeusem, aniž by bylo znát, že od prvního filmu již uběhly dekády. Praktické triky a estetika filmu byly též přijaty pozitivně (a já souhlasím – je to dokonalé), někteří dokonce o filmu tvrdí, že jde o jeden z nejlepších sequelů, který byl v posledních letech natočen. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice zaujal stávající fanoušky, kteří pamatovali první film, ale přitáhl I nové diváky a fanoušky.
Also the audience reactions have been similarly keen. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a warm standing ovation (also, please look up the outfits the cast wore in Venice, I adored Winona´s Victorian ea inspired outfit with long black tulle skirt). Fans of the original film have appreciated the Easter eggs of the universe established in the first movie even though you do not need to see the first one to understand and enjoy the sequel now, while new viewers have enjoyed the film’s unique blend of humour and horror. I have to say I feel like the sequel feels kinda „happier“ without focusing on an outsider main character (there is none this time, or it is not that big of a deal as in the other Burton´s movies) than the 1988 movie that had a depressed main character (which was mostly a goth pose, but I don´t want to go down this rabbit hole now).
Diváci se zdají být též spokojeni, podobně jako kritici. Film měl premiéru na Benátském filmovém festivalu, kde obdržel ovaci ve stoje (určitě se podívejte na fotky delegace filmu v Benátkách – moc se mi líbil outfit Winony inspirovaný viktoriánským stylem s dlouhou tylovou sukní). Fanoušci prvního Beetlejuice mohou v sequelu najít odkazy na první film, které potěší, noví diváci jej však nepotřebují předem zhlédnout, aby porozuměli příběhu a mohli si film užít. Za sebe bych chtěla říci, že mi sequel připadá trochu veselejší, pozitivnější – nesoustředí se na hlavní postavu, která by byla outsiderem (outsiderství se v tomto filmu neřeší na rozdíl od jiných Burtonových filmů) a na rozdíl od Beetlejuice z roku 1988 není hlavní postava depresivní (i když tehdy to byla spíše goth póza, ale v tomhle se teď hrabat nechci).

I have mostly seen the Beetlejuice inspired lip make-up that then started a mild controversy as the big beauty influencers were often unable to recreate the look because their lip fillers didn´t make it possible to crease their lips, which is crucial to do the look.

Já se nejčastěji setkala s make-upem rtů inspirovaných Beetlejuicem, který se přelil v menší drama, když mnoho velkých influencerů jaksi nebylo schopno tento look zopakovat, jelikož mají napíchané rty a tudíž na nich nejsou schopni vytvořit vrásky, které jsou pro tento tutoriál potřeba.
The film’s distinctive goth aesthetic has also influenced the fashion and beauty industries, which is something that we have already seen since the times of the release of the first Wednesday season (I am looking forward to the second one, though who knows when that will be). Costume designer Colleen Atwood, who is known for her long-standing collaboration with Tim Burton, has created costumes that mix goth and punk aesthetics. These designs have inspired fashion trends, with retailers and designers incorporating elements like black-and-white stripes, tulle gowns, and Victorian-inspired silhouettes into their collections.
Goth estetika filmu taktéž ovlivnila módní a beauty sektory, což jsme mohli zaznamenat již od doby první série seriálu Wednesday (již se těším na druhou sérii, ale kdo ví, kdy ji konečně dostaneme). Návrhářka kostýmů tohoto filmu Colleen Atwood, která je známá svou opakovanou spoluprací s Burtonem, pro film vytvořila kombinaci goth a punk estetiky. Její návrhy dále inspirovaly módní trendy, které se již přelily do obchodů s oblečením, kde již lze najít kolekce s černo-bílými proužky, tylovými sukně, viktoriánskou érou inspirovanými siluetami.
