Marie Laveau, who is often referred to as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, is a figure shrouded in mystery who actually lived in the 19th century. Despite being a woman in this era she was able to become a legend and her name is celebrated and is inspiring artists till these days. Marie was a well known practitioner of Voodoo, a healer and a spiritual leader (or a priestess if you want). You may remember her character being depicted (with some artistic license) in e.g. the American Horror Story series. New Orleans where she resided was a melting pot of African, French, Spanish, and Creole heritages, which provided an ideal base for the development of Voodoo. Laveau’s reputation as a powerful Voodoo practitioner was built on her ability to heal, protect, and influence the lives of those who sought her advice.
