Who was Antoinette Sibley? | Kdo byla Antoinette Sibley?

Antoinette Sibley was born in 1939 and joined the Royal Ballet in the UK in 1956 where she soon became a star. Her technical skills and expressive artistry helped her to rise to her fame. However since seemingly everything around theatre and performing may bring misfortune and magical or cursed objects are not a rarity, there was a talk about a curse around a pair of ballet shoes that, you guessed it, seemed to bring misfortune.

Antoinette Sibley se narodila v roce 1939 a přidala se ke k britskému Královskému baletu v roce 1956, kde se brzy stala hvězdou. Její technika a výrazný umělecký projev jí dopomohly ke slávě. Jelikož se však snad vše kolem divadla a hraní může přinést smůlu a o magické či prokleté předměty v tomto oboru není nouze, začalo se brzy ve spojitosti s Antoinette mluvit o prokletých baletních špičkách, které samozřejmě přinášely smůlu.

The origin of the shoes and the unfortunate events | Původ špiček a smolné momenty

The origin of the curse is unknown, but the legend has it that it began during the early years of Sibley’s career. The shoes were allegedly a gift from her admirer who claimed they were enchanted. Who the admirer was is not agreed upon, some say it was a wealthy man others that it was someone from the theatre. The shoes themselves were said to be beautifully designed, adorned with embroidery and ribbons. Their description however is merely anecdotal and there is no known photograph of this particular pair of shoes. Also considering that ballet dancers are quite quickly burning through their pointes she probably had dozens of shoes during her long career, so any of these may be THE pair.

Původ kletby samotné je neznámý, ale říká se, že začala v prvních létech kariéry Antoinette. Špičky byly údajně darem od jejího obdivovatele, který tvrdil, že jsou kouzelné. Shoda na tom, kdo byl tento obdivovatel není - někdo tvrdil, že šlo o bohatého muže, jiné, že šlo o kolegu z divadla. Špičky samotné prý byly nádherné, odzobené výšivkou a stuhami. Jejich popis je však spíše jen nepodloženou historkou a není známa žádná fotografie tohoto páru bot. S přihlédnutím k tomu, kolik špiček a jakou rychlostí baletky protancují, lze předpokládat, že Antoinette jich během své dlouhé kariéry vlastnila desítky, takže kdoví, který je TEN pár.

Antoinette did not believe these superstitions at first, but strange things started to happen soon. Although she was known for her technical skills, great balance and grace, she once suddenly stumbled and fell, which caused an injury. This was highly unusual for a dancer such as her. She dismissed the event as a fleeting lapse in concentration that led to her fall and injury and she continued to wear the shoes. However, the accidents kept happening. During another performance one of her shoes inexplicably came loose, which again caused her to lose her balance, she managed to avoid a fall at the last moment. Colleagues soon started whispering about the cursed shoes and some even refused to share the stage with her when she was wearing them. On another occasion Antoinette´s recurrent injury, which many attributed to the cursed shoes, got worse and it forced her to take a break from dancing. She eventually decided to retire the shoes permanently even though they had a sentimental value to her. Antoinette Sibley’s career continued and she herself retired in 1989.

Antoinette těmto pověrám zpočátku nevěřila, ale brzy se začaly dít podivné věci. Ačkoliv byla známá pro svou vybroušenou techniku, rovnováhu a vznešený pohyb, jednou zaváhala a upadla, což jí způsobilo zranění. To pro tanečnici jejího kalibru bylo velmi neobvyklé. Přešla to ale s tím, že nejspíše jen ztratila koncentraci, a proto upadla a zranila se. Své taneční boty tedy nosila nadále. Nehody se ale opakovaly. Během dalšího představení se jedna bota nevysvětlitelně uvolnila, a ona opět ztratila rovnováhu, přičemž se pádu vyhnula na poslední chvíli. Kolegové brzy začali šeptat o prokletých baletních špičkách a někteří dokonce odmítali vstoupit na jeviště, když je měla Antoinette obuté. Při dalším incidentu se její dlouhodobější zranění, které tak bylo připisováno prokletým špičkám, zhoršilo a musela přerušit baletní kariéru. Tehdy se již rozhodla přestat tento pár nosit, ačkoliv měl pro ni velkou sentimentální hodnotu. Baletní kariéra Antoinette Sibley pokračovala do roku 1989, kdy se ji rozhodla již nadobro ukončit.

The explanation of the curse | Vysvětlení kletby

The psychological impact of the curse on Antoinette and her colleagues cannot be understated. Theatre actors and ballet dancers are known for their superstitions around performing and rituals connected to it and the repeated accidents and injuries when the shoes were in the picture might have triggered some anxiety among fellow dancers who started to point out the connection of the events to the shoes, which might have created a self-fulfilling prophecy for Antoinette. A self-fulfilling prophecy is a situation when you dread a situation and try to prevent it and think about its negative outcome and you somehow make everything worse, almost manifest the bad outcome.

Psychologie měla jistě velký vliv na to, jak tato “kletba” působila na Antoinette a její kolegy. Divadelníci a baletky jsou známí pro různé pověry a rituály, které se vážou k vystupování na jevišti, a opakované nehody, u kterých byl tento pár bot, mohly na některé působit znepokojivě, takže si brzy vytvořili pojítko mezi nimi pojítko. Toto se mohlo stát sebenaplňujícím proroctvím pro Antoinette. Sebenaplňující proroctví je situace, kdy se obáváte něčeho a snažíte se tomu předejít, čímž situaci jen zhoršujete a kolikrát způsobíte, že se nejčernější plán stane realitou, jako kdyby jste si to přivolali.

Today, the cursed shoes are a part of ballet folklore. It is said they are preserved in a private collection but not showcased to the public due to their delicate condition and to keep their mysterious allure. Sceptics believe that the curse was just a coincidence, possibly a result of physical exhaustion, momentary lack of concentration or a wardrobe malfunction, which can happen to anyone, and the accidents happened to happen when the  “cursed” shoes were present. Believers are convinced that the shoes were cursed and are yet another example of how mysterious and superstitious the world of ballet can be. 

V současnosti jsou prokleté střevíce folklorem z baletního prostředí. Říká se, že jsou součástí soukromé sbírky a nejsou ukazovány veřejnosti, protože jsou křehké a navíc by mohly ztratit svou mysteriózní pověst, kdyby se okoukaly. Skeptikové tvrdí, že kletba byla jen souhra náhod - fyzické vyčerpání, ztráta koncentrace, selhání tanečního úboru, což se může stát komukoliv, a k nehodám došlo, když “prokleté” špičky byly zrovna náhodou u toho. Pro ty, co kletbě špiček věří, jde o další doklad toho, jak tajemný a pověrčivý svět baletu je.
