Raynham Hall is a big country house built in the early 17th century in Jacobean style. It has been the seat of the Townshend family ever since. The Townshend family has a long and distinguished history in British politics, with several members playing significant roles over the centuries. The Raynham Hall is renowned for its architectural beauty and various architectural styles can be found there as the place was renovated and expanded during the years of its long existence. The hall attracts history and architecture enthusiasts but also paranormal devotees.

Raynham Hall je velké venkovské sídlo vybudované počátkem 17. století v jakobínském stylu. Od svého vzniku byla sídlem rodiny Townshendových, která má dlouhou a celkem důležitou historii spjatou s britskou politikou, v níž se angažovalo hned několik členů tohoto klanu. Raynham Hall je známá pro svou architekturu, která byla během dekád vylepšována a měněna podle toho, jak bylo sídlo přestavováno a rozšiřováno. Toto místo tak láká nadšence do architektury, ale i do paranormálních úkazů.

The first recorded sighting of the Brown Lady was in 1835 during a Christmas gathering at Raynham Hall. Guests reported seeing a figure with empty eye sockets wearing a brown gown. This scary sighting caused a bit of panic, leading to some staff members quitting their service in the manor permanently. Another notable sighting described her as a figure in a brown dress with a glowing face.

První zaznamenané setkání s hnědou paní se událo během vánočního setkání v Raynham Hall v roce 1935. Hosté údajně viděli postavu v hnědé róbě a prázdnými očními důlky. Toto strašidelné zjevení vyvolalo pozdvižení a někteří sluhové raději dali výpověď ze služby.  Během dalšího setkání prý měla na sobě taktéž hnědé šaty, ale tentokrát její obličej svítil.

The most famous and tangible evidence of the Brown Lady’s existence (which is quite a rarity when it comes to paranormal occurrences) is a photograph taken in 1936 by photographers Captain Hubert C. Provand and Indre Shira. The image was taken for and published in Country Life magazine. It shows a transparent veiled ghostly figure on a staircase. This photograph´s authenticity has been widely debated and is considered one of the most iconic ghost images ever taken. The sceptics claim that the photograph may be a result of double exposure, a smudge on the film or some play of the lights and shadows in the interior.

Nejslavnější a hmatatelný důkaz (což bývá u paranormálních úkazů celkem vzácnost) existence hnědé paní  je její fotografie, kterou pořídili v roce 1936 fotografové Captain Hubert C. Provand a Indre Shira. Fotka byla pořízena pro magazín Country Life, kde byla i otištěna. Na fotografii je průhledná figura se závojem na schodišti. Pravost fotografie byla hojně diskutovaná a mnohými je považovaná za nejikoničtější fotografii ducha, která kdy vznikla. Skeptikové však podezírají, že mohla vzniknout dvojitou expozicí, že na analogovém filmu mohla být šmouha, nebo že jde o hru světla a stínu v interiéru.

Who was the Brown Lady on the stairs at Raynham Hall in Norfolk? | Kdo byla hnědá paní na schodišti Raynham Hall v Norfolku?

The Brown Lady is believed to be the restless spirit of Lady Dorothy Walpole (1686-1726), the sister of Robert Walpole, who was the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. Dorothy married Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, and moved into Raynham Hall. According to legend, Dorothy was locked in her rooms by her jealous husband who believed she had an affair with another man. It is said that she remained confined until her death from smallpox in 1726, other sources claim that she was just left to demise locked in the room.

Podle legendy by mělo jít o neklidného ducha lady Dorothy Walpole (1686-1726), sestru Roberta Walpolea, který byl prvním premiérem Velké Británie. Dorothy se provdala za Charlese Townshenda, druhého vikomta Townshenda, a přestěhovala se k němu do Raynham Hall. Podle pověsti Dorothy její žárlivý manžel uzamkl do jejího apartmánu, protože si myslel, že je mu nevěrná. Říká se, že uvězněna zůstala až do své smrti v roce 1926, kdy asi zemřela na neštovice. Jiní tvrdí, že nezemřela na nemoc, ale že ji její manžel prostě uvěznil a nechal zemřít.
