The Hope Diamond is a 45,52-carat deep-blue diamond that is one of the most famous precious gems in the world. Its history is rich with tales of grandeur, misfortune, and mystery. The blue colour might suggest to some that maybe this precious stone is actually a sapphire, however these two differ in crystal structure and properties and a colour is not the indicator. The Hope diamond really is a diamond of a rare blue colour.

Sytě modrý diamant Hope o 45,52 karátech patří k nejslavnějším šperkům světa. Jeho historií se prolíná okázalost, neštěstí i tajemno. Jeho modrá barva by mohl kdekomu naznačit, že tento drahokam je vlastně safír, ale opak je pravdou - safír a diamant se liší svým chemickým složením a vlastnostmi a barva není indikátorem toho, co je zač. Diamant Hope je tedy opravdu diamant vzácné modré barvy.

The origins and many shapes of the diamond | Původ a proměny vzhledu diamantu

The known history of the Hope Diamond’s journey begins in the 17th century with the French explorer and merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier. Tavernier acquired a huge blue diamond, likely during his visit to India. This diamond was sold to King Louis XIV of France in 1668, who had it recut into a smaller heart shaped gem to more adhere to the European taste in jewellery that prioritised symmetry more than size. The diamond got a name "French Blue". It was set in gold, so it appeared that there was a star or sun trapped in it and it became part of the French Crown Jewels.

Nám známá historie tohoto diamantu začíná v 17. století, kdy jej francouzský cestovatel a obchodník Jean-Baptiste Tavernier přivezl nejspíše z Indie. V roce 1668 byl zakoupen francouzským králem Ludvíkem XIV., který jej nechal přebrousit a tím i zmenšit do tvaru srdce, protože evropský vkus spíše upřednostňoval symetrii drahokamů před velikostí. Tehdy se drahokamu začalo říkat Francouzský modrý. Byl zasazen do zlata, takže to vypadalo, jako kdyby uvnitř byla chycena hvězda či slunce. Šperk se stal součástí kolekce francouzských korunovačních klenotů.

During the French Revolution, the French Blue was stolen and disappeared for two decades. It resurfaced in London in 1812, just after the 20-year-long statute of limitations for the theft had expired. At the time noone recognized it as it had been recut into a smaller stone, which later became known as the Hope Diamond, named after one of its next owners Henry Philip Hope.

Během velké francouzské revoluce byl ukraden a objevil se až o dvě dekády později v roce 1812, krátce po tom, co došlo k promlčení trestného činu jeho krádeže. Zprvu jej nikdo nepoznal, protože jeho tvar byl opět změněn a tím zmenšen. V této nové podobě získal nové jméno “Hope” (naděje) podle svého příštího majitele Henryho Philipa Hopea.

Notable owners of the diamond | Vlastníci diamantu

The Hope Diamond has passed through many hands, each adding to its mystique. After Henry Philip Hope, the diamond was inherited by his nephew, Henry Thomas Hope. The diamond remained in the Hope family until it was sold to pay off debts in the early 20th century.

Diamant Hope vlastnilo mnoho lidí, což přidává k jeho tajemné pověsti. Po Henrym Philipu Hopeovi jej zdědil synovec Henry Thomas Hope a v rodině Hopeů zůstal ještě nějakou dobu než byl prodán počátkem 20. století, aby rodina umořila dluhy.

In 1910 the French jewellery house Cartier acquired the Hope diamond and capitalised on its rich history, adding a narrative about a mysterious curse of the Hope diamond. Soon after the diamond got a new owner, an American socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean. McLean was known for her extravagant lifestyle and often wore the diamond at social events. Despite her wealth and status, McLean’s life was marked by personal tragedies, which some attributed to the diamond’s alleged curse.

V roce 1910 jej získal šperkařský dům Cartier, který dokázal vyzvednout unikátní historii drahokamu a přidal i historku o možní kletbě, aby byl atraktivnější pro potenciální kupce. Brzy na to jej do vlastnictví získala americká socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean, která byla známá pro svou extravagantnost a drahokam vynášela na různé společenské akce. Ačkoliv byla obklopena bohatstvím a měla vysoký společenský status, byl její život poznamenán osobními tragédiemi, které byly přiřčeny diamantu Hope.

After Evalyn´s death, the diamond was sold to the jeweller Harry Winston, who later donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. Today, the Hope Diamond is one of the most popular exhibits at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

Po smrti Evalyn získal diamant klenotník Harry Winston, který jej v roce 1958 daroval Smithsonian Institution. V současnosti je diamant Hope jedním z nejpopulárnějších exponátů v Smithsonian´s National Museum of Natural History.

Is the Hope Diamond cursed and why? | Je diamant Hope prokletý a proč? 

The Hope Diamond is often said to be cursed, with many of its owners experiencing misfortune and tragedy. The legend of the curse began with Tavernier, who allegedly stole the diamond when in India, bringing a curse upon himself and subsequent owners. While there is no historical evidence to support this story, it has persisted over the centuries.

O diamantu Hope se často tvrdí, že je prokletý, protože mnozí jeho majitelé prožili osobní tragédie. Kletba prý začala u Taveniera, který údajně diamant v Indii ukradl a tím proklel sebe i všechny jeho pozdější majitele. Ačkoliv pro toto tvrzení však není žádný historický doklad, traduje se již několik století.

Several owners of the Hope Diamond have suffered financial ruin, personal loss, and even death. For example King Louis XVI, and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were executed during the French Revolution. Henry Philip Hope’s family faced financial difficulties, and Evalyn Walsh McLean experienced the deaths of her son and husband, as well as her own financial ruin.

Několik majitelů skutečně zbankrotovalo, zažilo ztráty či smrt. Například francouzský král Ludvík XVI. a jeho manželka Marie Antoinette byli popraveni během velké francouzské revoluce. Hopeova rodina měla finanční problémy a Evalyn Walsh McLean pohřbila svého syna a svého manžela a měla též finanční potíže.

Despite these tales, many believe the curse is merely a myth, perpetuated by the diamond’s dramatic history and the human tendency to find patterns in random events and pinpointing just some facts as an evidence. The Smithsonian Institution, which currently houses the diamond, has not reported any unusual occurrences related to the precious stone.

 I tak mnozí věří, že tyto historky jsou jen mýtus, který pramení ze snahy lidí vidět vzorce tam, kde nejsou, a zveličovat některé události tak, aby se to hodilo jako důkaz  do jejich vyfabulovaného příběhu. Smithsonian Institution, která drahokam v současnosti vlastní v souvislosti s ním nezaznamenala žádné nevysvětlitelné úkazy.

Was Hope Diamond on Titanic? | Byl diamant na Titaniku?

No, the Hope Diamond was not on the Titanic. The idea that it was comes from the fictional story in the 1997 movie “Titanic.” In the film there is a blue diamond called the “Heart of the Ocean” that plays a significant role and leads us through the movie´s story. This fictional diamond was inspired by the real Hope Diamond, but there is no historical connection between the Hope Diamond and the Titanic.

Ne, diamant Hope neplul na Titaniku. Tato domněnka vychází z filmu Titanik (1997), kde hraje důležitou roli šperk s diamantem nazvaným Srdce oceánu, který nás provází dějem. Tento špek byl inspirován diamantem Hope, ale skutečná souvislost mezi diamantem Hope a Titanikem není.
