The cursed ring of Rudolph Valentino | Spooktober #6

The world of the movie industry is riddled with stories about glamour, luck and unfortune, mystery and sometimes even the supernatural. One such intriguing artefact is the ring owned by Rudolph Valentino who was a legendary silent movies actor of the 1920s. Rudolph Valentino is remembered for his movie roles and tragic early death (btw, another real historical figure that appeared in the American Horror Story series with some artistic licence). Valentino’s ring has garnered a reputation for being cursed.

Svět filmového průmyslu je protkán historkami o pozlátku, štěstí i neštěstí, záhadách a občas i o nadpřirozených jevech. Jedním z takových předmětů je prsten, který vlastnil Rudolph Valentino, proslulý herec němých filmů z 20. let 20. století. Rudolph Valentino zůstává nezapomenut díky svým filmovým rolím i proto, že zemřel předčasně, v mladém věku (mimochodem, jde o další reálnou historickou postavu, která se objevila v seriálu American Horror Story, opět s jistou uměleckou licencí). Výše zmíněný prsten Rudolfa Valentina si získal brzy pověst prokletého předmětu.

The unfortunate events connected to the ring | Nešťastné události spjaté s prstenem

Rudolph Valentino was an Italian actor who became a major sex symbol in Hollywood during the silent film era. His films, such as “The Sheik” (1921) and “Blood and Sand” (1922), cemented his status as a pop culture icon that is remembered till these days. However, his life took a dark turn, allegedly from the moment when he acquired a ring that was said to be cursed.

Rudolf Valentino byl herec s italskými kořeny a brzy se v Hollywoodu v éře němých filmů stal idolem. Filmy v nichž hrál, např. Šejk (1921) či Krev a písek (1922) mu pomohly stát se ikonou, vzpomínanou do dnešních dnů. V osobním životě se mu však moc nedařilo, což mnozí připisují právě jeho prstenu.

In 1920, Valentino purchased a plain silver ring with a semi-precious stone from a jewellery store in San Francisco. The jeweler warned Valentino that the ring was cursed, but Rudolph did not mind and bought it anyway. This moment is seen as the beginning of a series of unfortunate events that would plague Valentino and subsequent owners of the ring.

Rudolf koupil prsten v roce 1920 v klenotnictví v San Franciscu. Šlo o jednoduchý stříbrný kroužek s polodrahokamem. Prodejce jej však od koupě zrazoval s tím, že je šperk prokletý, což Rudolfovi nevadilo a i přesto si prsten zakoupil. Od této chvíle se zdá, že jej začalo potkávat jedno neštěstí za druhým, což se pak dále dělo i dalším vlastníkům prstenu.

Valentino wore the ring while filming “The Young Rajah” (1922), a movie that turned out to be a commercial failure. This was an unusual occurrence for Valentino, whose films typically performed well at the box office as he was such a beloved actor. In retrospect some may blame the “cursed” ring that he continued to wear. When 31 years old Valentino got sick and died. 

Valentino tento prsten nosil během natáčení filmu “The Young Rajah” (1922), který se stal kasovním propadákem. Něco naprosto neočekávaného, protože všechny filmy, ve kterých Valentino dosud účinkoval, byly úspěšné. Zpětně někteří tento neúspěch vysvětlují právě prokletým prstenem. Valentino prsten nadále nosil až do své předčasné smrti v 31 letech, kdy onemocněl a zemřel.

The ring’s curse did not end with Valentino’s death. It was passed on to his lover and fellow actress Pola Negri who soon fell seriously ill as well. Although she recovered, her career in Hollywood never regained its former glory. Negri then gave the ring to a young singer named Russ Columbo, who resembled Valentino. Tragically, Russ Columbo died in a shooting accident not long after receiving the cursed ring.

Kletba prstenu Valentinovou smrtí však nekončí. Prsten se dostal do rukou jeho milenky, herečky Poly Negri, která však také vážně onemocněla. Ačkoliv se jí podařilo se uzdravit, již se jí nepodařilo navázat na svou hvězdnou hollywoodskou kariéru. Prsten se rozhodla darovat mladému zpěvákovi Russovi Columbovi, který jí vzhledem připomínal Rudolfa. Russ však byl  brzy na to smrtelně postřelen.

The ring’s next owner, Joe Casino, decided to keep it tucked away and not wear it, aware of its dark history. However, he eventually wore it and got into a fatal accident soon after. The ring then passed to Casino’s brother, Del, who wisely locked it away in a safe for good. Unfortunately, the line of the victims do not end here as the ring was stolen by a man named James Willis, who was shot and killed by police during the robbery. The ring was recovered and returned to the safe, where it remained for some time.

Dalším vlastníkem prstenu se stal Joe Casino, který jej radši uschoval a nenosil, protože znal jeho historii. Jednoho dne se ale rozhodl si jej přeci jen navléci a brzy na to zemřel při nehodě. Prsten poté připadl jeho bratrovi, Delovi, který jej nadobro zamkl v sejfu. Jeho příběh tím však nekončí, protože jej ukradl James Wills, který byl při loupeži zastřelen policií. Prsten byl tedy navrácen do Casinova sejfu.

In the years following these events, the ring’s reputation as a cursed object grew. It was eventually retrieved by director Edward Small, who wanted to make a movie about Valentino. Small hired a starting actor Jack Dunn to portray Valentino and had him wear the ring. Two weeks later, Dunn got sick too and died.

V následujících letech pověst prokletého prstenu žila svým životem a rostla. Znovu spatřil světlo světa, když se dostal do rukou režiséra Edwarda Smallea, který jej chtěl jako rekvizitu do filmu o Valentinovi, kterého měl ztvárnit začínající herec Jack Dunn. Poté co prsten chvíli nosil, také onemocněl a zemřel.

Today, the ring is said to be kept in a vault in a Los Angeles bank, though some rumors suggest it has been stolen again. The cursed ring of Rudolph Valentino remains one of the most fascinating artefacts in the history of Hollywood as it is connected with a series of tragic events that sounds like a script for a mysterious horror movie. 

Říká se, že v současnosti je prokletý prsten Rudolfa Valentina uzamknut v bezpečnostní schránce v losangeleské bance. A možná také, že byl opět někým ukraden. Prokletý prsten Rudolfa Valentina patří k fascinujícím artefaktům světa Hollywoodu, protože je spjat s množstvím tragických událostí, které znějí jako scénář mysteriózního hororu.
